Traffic Sign Recognition

Featured Replies

I apologise if this topic has been covered before. I purchased TSR as an optional extra for my new car. The MFD only displays speed limits, which I am convinced are being picked up by the satnav and not the camera. Should the dealer  or SKODA have activated TSR before supplying the new car to me? Should the car go back to the dealer to have this activated so that it pcks up other road signs?

If it's showing in the Maxidot / MFD then it's more than likely TSR - if it's only showing in the sat-nav then it's navigation related - well, that's my understanding anyway.  I'd love to have it enabled on my car, but don't have VCDS and haven't got the time, nor energy, to search someone out who has locally...

IME the TSR display will show what it 'thinks' is the speed based on Sat Nav info, in the absence of speed signage.  The reason I think this is that there's a section of the A1 (southbound) at Elkesley which has significantly reduced it's 50MPH section.  The 50MPH signs that used to indicate the start of the section have been taken down and about 0.5 mile up the road is now a NSL sign; my car will display the 50MPH sign at the point the section used to start until it detects the NSL sign further up the road.  Further down the road it does still go into a 50MPH section and again TSR detects the sign and displays it accordingly.

I dare say this is some sort of safety/legal mitigation logic built in to the system...in the absence of signage display the lowest speed limit we do know about.

Oh and if speed signs are being displayed on the display in the binnacle then they can only come from TSR.  They wouldn't ordinarily be displayed without it, so it must be enabled on your car.

I suspect you may be overestimating the capabilities, and purpose, of TSR. TSR is quite limited in the type of road signs it displays. It is intended as an aide-memoir for displaying the current speed limit and, optionally, to give a warning if you exceed that limit. TSR is not infallible and can become easily confused, particularly at junctions where exit roads have different speed limits, though it will correct itself after a short distance or when it detects the next limit sign. Nor will it detect dirty or obstructed signs.

The TSR driver aid uses the SatNav speed limit data but is overridden if the camera detects a speed limit sign that is different to the speed data it receives from the SatNav.

It will also indicate if the speed limit is conditional - during certain hours, when wet, etc, - but you'll probably only come across these on the continent. A neat trick in a 'when wet' restriction is that it displays the lower limit as the primary sign if conditions are wet but the higher limit if it's dry.

TSR does not display the black & white derestricted sign in the UK as, like most countries, we have a national speed limit it will show the relevant NSL of 60 or 70 mph. Only on German Motorways and Fast Roads have I seen the MFD display the actual derestricted sign.

The only non-speed limit sign I have seen TSR display is No Overtaking.

You'll know that TSR is working the first time you approach road works or other temporary speed limit that is lower than the road's 'normal' speed limit. The SatNav has no data for these type of limits so you'll know it's the camera that has detected the temporary speed limit signs.

Thanks for your helpful responses. I suppose I was expecting one way street signs and a couple of others. Will be on M1 this weekend so will see if it picks up overhed gantry speeds.

I've had mine activated by VCDS and, as mentioned above, it'll only pick up speed limit and no overtaking signs.  There are probably too many signs on the road to pick up any more and find room to display them.

I've never come across a no overtaking sign in the UK as they're rarely used here, but when I've been abroad, I've come across them frequently and noticed that they're clever enough to ignore the signs if there's a plate under the sign showing the restriction only applies to vehicles over a certain weight or if they're towing.

FWIW I saw this video the other day, using OBDeleven ...
