Picked up the new MKIII today

Featured Replies

Guys

Picked up the new blue MKIII today...

One hiccup - the SD card for the nav unit isn't there 😞

The question is how do I get the software/data files required to make the nav work? do I really have to go to a Skoda main dealer (I dislike the nearest one... they don't seem to know what they are doing most of the time)? I presume a quick download from somewhere and a properly labelled & formatted SD card are all that is required...

The Infotainment system info screen shows

device part number 5E0035874A

Hardware 041

Software 0435

incase that helps decide what I need to do.

Shame the Ashtray on the MKII has been replaced with a  phone tray - it was the perfect place to balance my P9 to use as a sat nav!

Any top tips as to what to download/do?

Thanks in advance

Ben

You will need a genuine Skoda SD card for the maps on that unit. A regular SD won’t work, there is something in the card that makes this impossible. You will need a replacement and then you can download the latest map from the update portal.

Ah bottoms. Wonder how much that will be...

if I were to go to the bay to get one, which one do I need for the unit I have (isn't it great that there is no way of telling what unit you have in human readable form?)

No worries :) If you are familiar with the Mk2 there is nothing ground breaking here except a lot more component protection software if you like a good retrofit!

The factory sat nav is poor and that's being kind, if you have smartlink, I suggest you play around with Andriod auto or apple Car play with Google maps before spending any cash..

IIRC neither was available on MIB1

Correct, I have a MIB1 Amundsen so I have to live with no CarPlay or Android Auto.

MIB2 can be retrofitted at no small cost but depending on how you use the car it can be worth it.  I think VAG have closed the backdoor recently on the MIB2 Amundsen so MIB2.5 or other models would be required.  MIB2.5 Columbus seems to be the go to at the moment.  Not cheap but has many features that the lower models don't and probably sounds better too.

It was terrible. Entering destinations, fairly fundamental, is a pain.

Have nav in mine, have used it twice in 3400 miles, Waze every time for me.  It is scary that in reviews that the VAG current system is regarded as one of the best!!!!

Is your Mondeo Sync 2 or 3?

Sync 3. The factory nav seems good, or I can use Google maps.

I'm quite old skool, though, I don't use nav very often.

Just go back to the garage you got it from and tell them to sort it.

Unless it was declared as missing when you got it...

Mine was missing when I picked my car up, the garage had it in the office as they tend to go walkies if left in the cars.

A lot of the "stealers" take them out and sell them on E bay too.

If it's taken out of a car that is supposed to have it then they should replace it otherwise the car doesn't function as it's supposed to...

Guys

Thanks for the messages. The time and distance involved cost more to me than the £25 for the sd card.

By the way if Kev, who owned the car before me - the Bluetooth name was Kevs Car, is reading this, do you want your Cat Stevens CD back? :)

As to the utility or otherwise of the nav system..... I usually use Android Auto but want to have the car one as a backup. I have yet to find a suitable place to balance the phone - the mkii has the ashtray cover which was exactly the right size for the phone to rest on without flying everywhere when cornering. The phone tray lid isn't as useful in the mkiii. Any suggestions?

Then name those built in systems that are better?

I rarely use SatNav but when I do it works easy for me - what's the problems I'm supposed to be having?  Why is entering destinations a pain - all seems straight forward enough to me.

I've tried both Google and Waze but the trouble with those is that the map isn't displayed in front of me. With the manufacturer's system I can turn off the annoying voice that contunually interrupts my conversation or listening to music / radio and simply have basic instructions delivered to me on dash. I also need to have my phone connected to the car to use Google maps or Waze - I prefer not to have cables everywhere - it's 2020 not last millenium.

OP - no need to return to garage, just tell them to post the SD card out to you.  People often ask on here what to look out for when picking up a new car and one of the most common replies is to check for SD Card. I've picked up three brand new cars now where SD Card has been missing. As others say, the garage usually insert it just before you collect the car as they have a tendancy to be stolen.

I had sync 2 in my Kuga and our Fiesta has officially sync 2.5 (sync 3 with no nav but CarPlay) and no embedded modem.

I was not saying I am aware of many factory setups that are far better, I was just meaning if the VAG one is generally regarded as one of the best, it is a sad state of affairs.

Our 15 plate Renault Zoe had standard inbuilt TomTom with live traffic and I felt that was better and also significantly superior to the BMW Pro Nav that my brother had at the time in a BMW 3 series and that was a close on £1000 on top of standard nav.

I thought Renaults system was good too, especially with live info and the way 3D type maps were displayed at motoway exits. Renault also produced several updates throughout the year which were easy to download - that's  real positve. But the graphics looked last century compared to VAG, you couldn't zoom in/out the map as easy or move the map around and there wasn't half the available customisation / configuration available to Renault as there is on VAG.

And as far as MC Bodge's comment goes, it's no more easy or hard to input a destination in VAG's sytem than it is in Renault's.

I'm not meaning to be awkward, but I'm just finding an increasing amount of people will rubbish something without question or explanation, and it's rare they ever mention what they're comparing it to. Wish folk would be a tad more objective when passing comment.
