Oil temp readout on maxidot display

Featured Replies

My Oil Temp readout is always blank, with "-- " instead of a number.

My mechanic told me it only reads a temp when it gets too hot / or gets over a certain threshold.

I seem to remember my previous Superb had a temp there (might be mistaken).  Should I see something at regular driving temps?

I've also ran quite low on oil on the dipstick, but never had a warning come on.  Was using heaps of oil until I replaced the Positive Crankcase Ventilation filter.

Again the mechanic said the dipstick doesn't go that deep into the sump, and there's a big reservoir of oil remaining even if the dipstick is past the low point.

Was considering replacing the oil sensor under the engine but wanted advice first

To " @AussieAnth " - I am not absolutely sure about but as far as I remember the first number is 50°C..

Is the car set to variable or fixed servicing schedule? I seem to remember reading of disappearing oil temp displays on cars that had been changed from variable to fixed?

I'm not sure Wino.  Its serviced by an independent VAG specialist, and they place the usual reminder sticker with the next interval on it.

Is there an easy way to find out?

To me it sounds like the oil temperature sender is faulty. It should start to read out around from 50 *C upwards. It would be worth getting the car scanned with a VAG compatible scantool to see if there are any error codes stored, and also access measuring blocks to see if the sensor is being read ok.

It has been so common over the years for Technicians / Fitters resetting service intervals to lose the 'Oil Temp' reading from showing.

The clue is the car goes in showing it before the Service & leaves no longer showing it.
