2004 Skoda octavia 1.9 4x4

Featured Replies

Hello.    I'm new here and don't know very much about cars!

Just looking for a clue about what could be wrong.   Car is booked in too garage next week.

Last year it had new brake pads and discs at front new pads at back.

New suspension arms and bushes for mot.

It's had new glo plugs recently and the egr valve cleaned very recently.

That's all ok but this week it's started making a rubbing noise on slight right turns.  Getting worse doesn't do on full lock just slight bends and does at all speeds.   As I said it's booked in next week but I'm worried it might be something bad and expensive!    I don't know much at all and can't Jack it up or anything.  Just joined for a idea of what it might be.   Have looked it up and ball joint, wheel bearing etc look possible but don't seem to fit completely on symptoms.

Garage is good and don't think will rip me off but am concerned about possible cost. m ot due in mid April.

Thanks and sorry for lack of info. I'm no mechanic and just looking for some possible answers.

Sorry if I've posted this in the wrong place!

You're not giving us many clues...

Is the sound specific to a corner of the car, low/high pitched, constant or intermittent in nature, varies in frequency with speed?

I'll start the guessing game with a stone or other foreign object(s) caught between a brake disc and shield.

Check wheel bolts security, something fairly innocent sounding could be very dangerous to the unwitting-seek professional help immediately if in doubt.

Thanks.  Sorry for the lack of details but I really don't know a great deal about cars.

It is booked in to the garage next week which was the earliest they can do.

It seems to come from the front drivers side.  It can happen at slow speeds or faster.  I've not heard it in reverse.

It sounds like something rubbing.

Its only there on right slight turns.   Not heard it on full lock.

It could be anything, you just need to use a trusted garage and see what they come back with.

@Horsey1

You don't need to know anything about cars to describe the sound e.g. it could sound like cutlery sliding against each other or a fingernail dragging across a large empty cardboard box.

Not knowing your location, I'm going to have a stab and guess you've been through flood water/puddles at speed and part of the undertray/wheel well liner has come adrift and is rubbing on the tyre.

Thanks for the replies.   I've not driven fast through any flood water.  Just going to have to wait and see what Garage says.   Was just trying to get a idea what it might be.  Thanks anyway.

If something is rubbing it should be relatively easy to spot. Start the engine and turn the wheels to the point you would normally hear the rubbing.

Turn the engine off and stick your head into the wheel arch, preferably with a view of the inside of the wheel.

Only the wheel and drive shaft move, so if something is rubbing it is likely to be related to either of these areas.

Does anything look out of place, loose or are there clean bits suggesting it's been touching something it shouldn't?

Thanks,  unfortunately I cant see anything that looks out of place or obviously wrong.  All I can do is wait until garage can have a look.  I've spoken to the mechanic and he's says he will drive it and put it up on ramp so hopefully he can find out what's wrong.

Can only hope it's not serious or expensive.

I'm driving myself mad trying to work out what's wrong by Google and YouTube but I just don't know what I'm looking for so will just have to wait and see.

if its more of a hum its probably the wheel bearing starting to go.

All the possible moving parts will be in these areas...

As mentioned hidden noises are likely to be wheel bearing or transmission / gearbox related.

What do your CV joint gaiters / boots look like? Any splits / grease leakage?

Thanks for the replies.   It turned out to be a wheel bearing.

At least it wasn’t too bad to sort out 👍
