DPF - Remove, clean or replace

Hi all I posted a while back about my skud being smokey. My question now is what's the best solution. Do I replace the dpf, remove the dpf and map the car or can I have the dpf cleaned?

 

Since posting my issues before I now take a longer route to work roughly once a week or maybe once every 2 weeks which takes the car along a motorway of roughly 18 miles. Before I'd just drive through towns and mainly be doing 30mph apart from some areas in between where I'd get upto 60mph. This route is 13miles from my house to work and on this journey is when I find that the car will start to smoke now and again.

 

Or do I just carry on and not worry about a little smoke now and again? Is this just a typical thing to expect from these cars (cr170) 

 

I have noticed an improvement running along the motorway but from time to time I still see a bit of smoke however nothing like I was getting before and when I do get that bit of smoke I'll just take the car along the motorway again on my next trip to work.

You can get the DPF cleaned on the car now for around £200 at garages with the right kit. Seemingly you can also get DPF cleaner yourself for about £20 and put it in the DPF sensor hole and leave it for a short while then run it to burn off the solution leaving it cleaner but never seen it done.

 

Theres a garage just outside Falkirk cleans it out still fitted on the car. There must be one near you.

 

Theres also a specialist in Grangemouth cleans them off the car but you will need to remove it.

I live in Fife so that's nice and easy to get to. It's not an issue taking the dpf off the car as I have a weekend/track day car that I can use for work or if I wait till the better weather comes I can use my bike 😀

The CR engines are normally pretty good with their DPF's.

 

I wouldn't bother with additives, although they can help remove soot, they can't remove the incombustible ash. If the DPF needs cleaning, it should be removed and done properly.

 

Once it's clean, it might be worth doing some diagnostic work to try and figure if there is an underlying issue or not. Are you loosing any oil?

Turbo has just been replaced under warranty as it had a little play in the shaft. They thought this would cure the smoking however it still smokes from time to time when doing my journey to work. I can only imagine the car isn't getting upto a decent temp and is then a build up of whatever is going on so when it does smoke it smokes bad. 

 

Again I have now found that if I go that bit further and drive the motorway the car seems to be ok but my thinking is it should be ok on the shorter route as it's still a 13 miles journey. 

Car doesn't use any oil, pulls really well and gets decent mpg

If the turbo was leaking oil, it may just be residual oil in the exhaust/dpf that is burning off when the temp is high enough.

13miles isnt very far at all for diesel imo.. esp if its then parked upfor a shift and another 13mile stroll home.. even the longer 18miles is a bit borderline. i always reckon 25miles is the distance that wins over a petrol, but that just my opinion...

@FatblokeVRS I've had a decent 100+ mile run in the car which I'd have thought would burn any residue off. Since the turbo was changed I've possibly done a total of 500 miles.

The car does seem to run alot better doing the 18mile run and idles where it's meant to. When I got the car in September it's mostly idled at 1k which I thought was normal as it was basically always there. It wants till I started doing longer runs I'd notice the car would idle lower. I then thought it could be that it's mapped and that's just how it was. 

 

I'll look into taking the dpf off and send to this specialist in Grangemouth

I had and e39 530d with a blocked breather, it was burning oil and it took a good few weeks of commuting from Birmingham to London for the week to clear it up.

Idling at 1k revs suggests it's trying to run a dpf clean cycle. I'd get yourself an obd11 reader, a Bluetooth one if you have an Android phone, and get the vagDPF app, it should tell you the dpf condition, whether it's blocked etc and when it's doing a clean etc. If you see it's going to do a clean you can do a longer drive until it's finished. I drive round the block a couple of times before getting to work to let it finish if I notice it doing a clean.
