1.6tdi Engine knock on warm start

Featured Replies

Have a 1.6cr Elegance which I am thinking if buying.

Has a few issues, which are all easily fixable, such as back brakes sticking on, water pouring in the rear pressure vent, faulty window switch, nothing serious.

However, if I drive it for a bit until the oil is up to temp, then stop for a wee while, say for half an hour or so, when I jump back in it and start it, it sounds like my mum's old 1990 Escort Diesel, clacking its head off.  After a few hundred yards it's goes quiet again and all is well with the world. It's actually much quieter on a cold start.

I am assuming it's an oil system problem.

I should mention, I have another Fabia and a Caddy with the CAY engine and they don't do this, and that before I took it for a trial period, it had just been serviced by the guys that look after my car's and van so they know what they are doing.

Anyone have any ideas, don't want to buy a proper lemon.

Cheers

Lennie

@Jaspire  How old is this one and how many miles done?

Has it had The Fix and are you sure that who ever has it has the correct oil in?

I know nothing about them but someone will be along.

@Roottootemblowinootsoot 2010 with 87k on the clock.  I trust the mechanics to have put the right oil in ok, they have been looking after my others for over 10 years now.  Ex-Seat dealership foreman owns it, and the main mechanic is ex the same dealership, so should be right enough.  I might get them to change it again, as they will be doing the back brakes this week sometime.

Thanks

The Oil filter should be on correctly then.

You are thinking along the same lines as me that oil is draining too quickly into the sump and the oil is thinner when warm.

It's not losing any, which is why I was asking in case it is unrelated to the oil system.

Too risky - dont buy it!

Turns out it was serviced last about 15 months ago, according to the mechanic, and the lad who has been driving it for the 12 months previous to his dad taking it off him and parking it up, isn't kind to his motors.

It was only in for an MOT shortly before it was taken off the road.

Going to get the oil changed and see how it fares the rest of the week.  If it's still the same, better to have spent a few Bob on an oil and filter change than a couple of thousand on a duffer.

@Jaspire

Are these mechanics, master mechanics & the lad who has been driving it really really worth trusting?

Is it a really really bargain price and have you already bought it?

The story is I am buying it from a friend whom I have known all my adult life.  The boy is a nice boy, but unappreciative of what his parents provide for him, and therefore cares not what he does with his cars.  The car belonged to his sister until 2017, when she got a new Fabia, but as he isn't looking after it, his dad has taken it off him.  So I know the arse will have been ripped out it for a year, but my friend thought it had been serviced about 3 months ago, but he only asked the boys to MOT it, which they duly did.  The last record they have of a proper service was December 2018.  Knowing it will have been driven sore in the 12 months since then, I was hoping there might not have been much damage done other than it having sat for a few months idle.

I am hoping that the noise goes away once the oil and filter has been changed, but if not and no other explanation can be found, I won't be buying it and my friend is just going to run it down to WBAC and get rid.

I think that covers it 😁

All the best then.

I used to run a Fabia 1.6 TDI Elegance (2010) and took it from 30k to over 100k miles before I sold it. No experience of any kind of it knocking on this engine. I used to renew the oil every 10k miles using Castrol Edge 5W30 and Mann oil filters.

If you do an oil change, check the used oil, and avoid the pump extraction option. Run to temperature and drop the sump plug. The DPF flexi pipe is a known weak point, as are countless issues with oxygen sensor intake, glow plug wiring, etc.

You mentioned sticking rear brakes. It's a thankless task trying to resolve, but that's drums for you. The rear drums are probably worn with a lip, and the only real fix it to renew them, rebuild with new shoes including spring kit (Bigg Red), new pistons (they leak) and new brake cables. as they stretch. Avoid using the handbrake at this time of year.
