Looking for my next car - a VRS

Featured Replies

Demonstrators / management cars / lease / fleet cars can all be changed to Fixed Service @ the PDI, or even with private customers who ask to have them set to fixed.

Some that leave on Variable might get a service before going to the next keeper or owner and get reset to fixed.

It is only cheeky when done without asking a new Owner at hand over or preferably before what they would like the Service Interval to be and changed from Variable to Fixed.

If the car is getting a Service Plan with Fixed Servicing then it is usual to change to Fixed on the Service Indicator.

  • @sheriffwoody Do you need a car right now?   Maybe best wait if you can.    There are going to be people ill, dying, losing jobs and companies closing, sad as that is there will be

  • The biggest difference between a 2017 230 and 245 is not the 15bhp but the extras you get with the 245. The power difference is something of nothing in reality what you're getting with a 2017 spec 245

the budget isnt neceserilly £15-16k, this is just the one that came up from my local dealer.  I have been looking up to around £21-22k for the perfect model, but for that i would want as close to mint

the car in question is set to variable service plan

My wife's Karoq bought new on 26/01/18 had it's first free service last October at 18,700 miles and has currently clocked up 23,800 miles. When I checked when the Inspection service is due (also free) I was surprised to see the onboard computer calculated it due in 583 days or 15,900 niles time.

any thoughts on either of the 2 VRS's - good value for money?  Obviously one is the 230bhp and the other is the 245bhp.  Is the difference in power very noticeable?

230bhp (on variable servicing, last serviced 11 months ago. isn't due another one technically until april 2021)

https://westendgarage-group.usedcars.skoda.co.uk/en/used-cars/skoda/octavia/vrs-hatch-2017-20-tsi-vrs-230ps-dsg-tdb9qht

245 bhp (know nothing about this one yet)

Both look OK to me, can't comment if you would notice the difference in power between the two, as I've not driven a 245.

Just a thought the insurance will be slightly more for the 245, well it was for me anyway.

I had a 66 plate 230 manual Hatch  from new and I now have a  245 19 plate Manual Hatch also from new.  The difference in BHP is only 15 between both models but ( My opinion ) the 245 is considerably faster than the 230.  I believe ( told by master tech ) that the 245 has a different fuel pump and injectors. ( true or not I don't really know ). test drive them both and see..............

Having owned an early 17 plate 245 they are very high spec cars as standard, personally I prefer the black car over the grey car, the 245's interior is much nicer the infotainment is better, the price difference is small and the 245 is lower mileage and it has 19" Xtremes rather than the 18" Gemini's and you can improve grip like a lot of owners by fitting 235/35R19 Michelin PS4S tyres when replacing the standard P Zeroes. My manual car averaged over 40mpg over 29,000 miles was faultless and insurance was £300 per annum. When put on a rolling road it actually produced 249bhp (252PS) and a remap gave it 302bhp and 467nm of torque if you require more performance.

Not sure if it is an error on the dealers end, but they have sent me through two pdf PCP documents now (one over 36 and one over 48 months) and the monthly amount is very attractive and well below budget - but I can see the cost of the car on the pdf document appears to be quite a lot lower than what it is advertised for.

unfortunately test driving both is going to be out of the question as one is in wales (5 hours away) and one is in Scotland (8 hours away)!!

will need to find one closer and test drive that and then make a decision

got some figures back from the 245 model and they are pretty decent too - black wasn't my first choice colour, and will be a nightmare to keep clean, but it could be the best value one i can find.

it has heated front seats and electric front memory seats too, which is a bonus.

Have you considered a personal loan? You could get 18k over 5 years for £323 @2.9% providing of course you're credit rating is good enough. Makes more sense in my eyes as at least at the end of the term the car is yours. You could also part-ex earlier and extend the loan or just get another.

Not sure if this link will work, but this is a video with a bit more detail of the car and any damage it has.

any thoughts on the condition?

Watched the full video and having owned 2 Black Magic Skoda's now they do show every mark but overall I don't think there is anything to worry about. I had a similar small chip in my 245 windscreen after just 1,000 miles and it hadn't got any worse by the time I traded it in at 29,000 miles. If your trade in is just £250 and they are charging you just £260 per month I would say go for it because it is clearly one of the early special edition cars and they are not lacking for any equipment including electric folding mirrors when you lock the car.

what about it makes it a special edition? (i didn't know there was such a thing)

Yeah, black was one of my least favourite options for colour just because they show everything, but i might take it to a professional detailer to perform paint correction on it and machine clean to it try and get some of the swirl marks out of it

From August 2017 for about 6 months the first 245 came with a gloss black front grill, black VRS badges,front/rear parking sensors, electric heated front seats, performance monitor, black tailpipes, folding mirrors and only came in 3 launch colours (black, white and grey) and cost £27,595. Mine was £29,100 before discount because it had the spare wheel, electric sunroof, reversing camera and Metallic paint. They have a special interior with coloured logo's on the leather/alcantara seats and ambient lighting on all 4 doors plus the 19" Xtreme alloys are standard and came with Pirelli P Zero tyres from the factory.

Sounds good. What is the performance monitor?

only thing this one is missing that I wish it had would be a reversing camera.

When you select Sport mode you can show lap timer, g-force through corners and similar performance related stuff. A bit gimmicky really unless you plan to do plenty of track days (did 2 in my car 120mph on the straight bits at Donington and Snetterton).

a few more photos online now of the black 245

https://www.sinclairskoda.co.uk/used-car-details/used-skoda-octavia/id-229686422567131122/

There is a new photo on there with a close up of the DSG stick and surround - i was surprised how scratched and scuffed the entire black surround is.  Is this something that normally happens? (photo 16)

The only other thing is that if you HPI check it the car does come back as "finance owed" only because the car is still owned by barclays finance because the garage don't actually "buy" the car until they have owned it for 90 days (if they bought all the cars out of their finance then it would cost them a fortune) - so i am assuming i would agree a deal, get the pcp in place and then all the old finance is settled and i start up my own finance scheme etc.

Scratches probably caused by lazy owner chucking their house keys there rather than keep them in their pocket. My car although manual never suffered from any scratches to the piano black surrounds.

how easy are they to replace (if at all possible)?

There is a cheap solution you can buy a wrap in carbon fibre effect and cut to size as some owners have already done on here. Perhaps Superskoda website sell such a kit or you could source the wrap yourself, make a template using cardboard and DIY.

The scratches on the gloss black gear lever surround is likely from careless cleaning.

The alloys have been exposed to some seriously aggressive acidic chemicals too, judging by the bleached plastic wheel bolt caps...

  • Author

what sort of chemicals are you thinking?

£5, £6 even £10 or more car wash places that spray on the wheel cleaner and then the next person dashes in and cleans the wheels.

TFR, or Traffic Film Remover.

There are some very good quality TFR's out there that do their job well.

But, as with everything in life there is really cheap stuff with one job, to make washing cars as quick and easy as possible for the lowest cost. The stuff the roadside £5 car washes buy and use by the 20 litre container load. Diluted into a hand pump sprayer and doused all over your car whilst you're queuing, quickly eating through any protection on the paint, tarnishing chrome, eating its way through lacquer, exposing any weaknesses it touches and of course stripping off the muck.

If its strong enough to bleach plastic, imagine what it's doing to the rest of the car.

Considering those caps have a trade price of pennies, then quite why a franchised Skoda main dealer hasn't replaced them prior to advertising the car and taking the pictures should give a little clue as to the thoroughness and effectiveness of their used car team. Those scratches around the gear lever look really horrible, but are easily remedied. This isn't Jimbobs Used Car Sales, you're looking at paying a premium for an approved used Skoda from a Skoda retailer.

After washing it, it would take a few extra minutes to take the car around the industrial estate and perform some hard emergency stops. Give those brake discs they've zoomed in on for the photo's a good clean, ridding them of all that horrible rust.

These are basics, it just smacks of a lazy carefree dealer
