Looking for my next car - a VRS

quick question - in the car i am looking at they have sent me a video of it and during a presentation of the inside he showed me the different driving modes on the screen but it only had "eco, normal, sport and individual" but on all the reviews online and youtube they have an extra "comfort" setting.

Any reason why the model i am looking at doesn't have this comfort mode?

  • @sheriffwoody Do you need a car right now?   Maybe best wait if you can.    There are going to be people ill, dying, losing jobs and companies closing, sad as that is there will be

  • The biggest difference between a 2017 230 and 245 is not the 15bhp but the extras you get with the 245. The power difference is something of nothing in reality what you're getting with a 2017 spec 245

the budget isnt neceserilly £15-16k, this is just the one that came up from my local dealer.  I have been looking up to around £21-22k for the perfect model, but for that i would want as close to mint

Comfort is only available with the optional DCC dynamic adjustable dampers. Normal cars only have 4 modes.

ah ok - so at least that is a quick way of seeing if the car comes with DCC or not. Thanks

Only the later 2019 Challenge special editions had DCC as standard.

I shopped around for two to three months waiting for a car with DCC but couldn't find one before I needed a car. Seems rare.

I would imagine they are rare as it was an expensive option to pick when buying new.

i can find it on this one (estate, lovely colour and has the canton pack too)

but yeah, pretty rare otherwise

In normal mode the car is comfy, Wife and two critical daughters both agree it's comfy on a long journey.

I had DCC in my Golf R, I thought it was a must have for me as I wanted a more comfortable ride than standard. In reality I never changed it from Comfort (all other setting were very hard but its all up to personal choice), so had the suspension been set up softer I would not have used it. Key for DCC is it can make Hard suspension softer, if you are happy with the standard set up don't worry about it. Tyre sizes probably make as much difference, i.e. going from 18s to 19s, or vice versa.

Having said that my wife thought our vRS (2014) was too hard so maybe it could have done with it!!

just had the Admiral quote back and whilst it is at 5.9%, the monthly cost is over £60 more than I have been quoted previously through dealerships.

Granted, the final payment at the end is much lower £2.3k rather than £6-7k, but the monthly cost falls outside of budget.

@sheriffwoody Be a bit careful here

Many a salesman has played with the monthly vs residual to bring the monthly under budget to lure people.

If you don't look at it including the final payment then you risk not being prepared for that hefty end payment, and if you can't afford it when it is due, might end up with no car, no deposit for a replacement car, and still owing a settlement on this, and extra costs (for excess mileage and damage).

Think of the whole cost (from getting it, to selling it), anyone who only looks at the monthly (and ignores deposit and balance and extras costs), risks getting into a financial hole.

Be financially savvy, don't just consider the monthlies

so the dealership has come back with a a good price - just above the budget for where i wanted to be, but does include 3 year gap insurance, 2 year breakdown (don't need as i have that with my bank) and some kind of lifetime autoglym shine and protection package.

This will also include the next two services as well - these have to be fixed services at 10k/12 miles, but then i can ask Skoda to change me over to variable servicing so that will be good.

Sorely tempted now 😄

@sheriffwoody

That is not an Arnold Clark Motor Group Dealership is it???

Watch a video on car buying and salespeople.    You just got the full Sales pitch..

They used the Car salesperson book of tricks.

Go higher than they want with offers.

Were they back and fore to see their boss?

That lifeshine's value is actually costing them under £50, that is material and labour.

They have the GAP insurance over priced, you can get it cheaper.

You have your own Breakdown Cover.

They want you tied into Servicing with them.    Ask for £500 more off, they will not, that costs them money.

I agree. You dont need GAP from them as you can get it yourself for a third of what they ask for.

You dont need autoglym shine as you can get your card detailed and professionally protected for less. Breakdown is neither here or there. Servicing I wouldnt touch it as they are overpriced and dont use genuine parts.

I would go back and say you dont want the extras, just the car. If they cant do that then dont be afraid to say "I dont want the car then". You will get the old I will speak with my manager and no doubt a cheaper monthly payment

The servicing is the only thing I really want out of it, but it’s through Skoda, so will be taken to a skoda dealership to have the service done and then Skoda stamp in the book - worth the £169 imo for 2 skoda services.

he has already said there isn’t much in the car he can do, he has reduced the monthly down by about £6 a month from the first initial figures last month and basically just thrown in all the extras.

end of the day it’s a £20k car with a minimal deposit being put down so only so much they can do on the price.

If you are looking at the high spec Grey 67 plate at the Bolton garage with 19,000 miles on it having had a similar early 17 plate car it probably comes with electric seats, heated seats and folding electric mirrors and personally I think it's decent value at £18,000. I would buy if I liked Meteor Grey but I don't like that colour.

Obviously there is not much more he / she can do.

They can not reduce the employers / owners profits.

There is commission to earn. But they do want a sale. Actually they really want a sale in the first quarter 2020.

Unless it is 2 services on Variable Servicing then it does not suit your needs.

If the MOT or MOT's are included then that is another PITA not a benefit.

We can only forewarn you.

?

Can you not say what dealership group?    As it is it does not matter, they are basically the same around the country.

i appreciate all the warnings and thoughts - i am just trying to work it all out in my head.

with the servicing my thought process was that i will just take the two fixed services for the next 20k miles and then switch to variable servicing.

if i don't take out the service plan and i go onto variable servicing straight away then i will need to pay for my own servicing at least once within those 20k miles, at a cost of around £200 or so? so in my mind i am just about breaking evening which ever route i go down?

This is the car in question, from Pulman Skoda (unfortunately it's about 6 hours away from me!) - thoughts?

Seems high to me unless there has been a very recent spike in prices. 67 plate 245s were going for around 16 to 17k in February at average mileage. Granted this has very low mileage, I don't think I would add 3k value for it. My hobby was looking at adverts.

Definitely think about whole cost if you are wanting to keep it at the end of the agreement. If you don't have the lump in cash you effectively end up paying interest twice on the final lump. Once in the PCP and then again whichever way you choose to refinance it.

Can't see any 67 onwards DSG 245's for 16-17k.  Cheapest one on autotrader is £16,290 but with over 40k miles on the clock, then it jumps up to over £18k.

i have actually spoke to that place (via live chat), but the guy was rude, unhelpful and not very accomodating - so decided to leave that one ("THANKS FOR WASTING MY TIME!" was his actual response when i wished him well and that i wouldn't be taking it further)

so, the plot thickens.  Just found out that if the car is under 12 months old the APR rate drops to 5.9% rather than 7.5% - which doesn't sound much, but helps with the monthly cost.

So i have found a just over 6 months old 19 plate 245, and on the same small deposit with 15k miles it is coming in at £305 a month (without any haggling or work etc).  this is without the service plan, so i can put the car straight onto a variable service and then hopefully not have to undertake it for a little while.

Not meaning to thicken it more, but does it come with the same spec? The earlier 245s came with more stuff on them as standard, alcantara memory seats etc vs cloth as standard.

Yes - the new 2019 one i have found comes with heated, electric memory seats as the other one did (the red one from Pulman).  Doesn't have DCC, but nor do many of them.  No upgraded sound system either, but neither did the red one.

A six month old car should come from the factory on variable servicing unless the supplying has fiddled with the onboard computer to change it to fixed. If you go to look at the car this is a good test in the vehicle settings under servicing as to how honest or not a dealer is/isn't.
