Turbo replacement needed?

Featured Replies

My Fabia is fairly 'high mileage' now and is on 175K. I tried to join a carriage way, and I held it on 'launch control' which I added using EDCSuite (Yes, Im an idiot I know).

The turbo inlet hose came off, and a bolt was bent and sheared and fell out of the turbo... it looks like it has a torx head? It looked roughly 5cm long, and fairly thin, 3-4mm thick. Is this time for a new turbo, new engine, or bin the car?

Just get the turbo rebuilt if you're worried.

Blimey, scrapping the car is a bit of an overreaction, may I humbly suggest that rather than beating the car with a stick for being unreliable you stop doing stupid stuff to it, this isn't an episode of fawlty towers!

No no no no, let's not be hasty. Get him to beat it with a stick and film it. It'd be a good laugh as all other forms of entertainment seem to be cancelled at present.

@OP: No one knows. Mystic mechanic is self isolating and anyone else would have to check the parts over before deciding if they're screwed or not. If the turbo hoses are becoming problematic (mine are), there's an upper turbo pipe replacement topic....  Which may also cover the lower pipe.

A better question might be, is it safe to do 40 miles to the mechanic If the turbine is fallen apart? Or is it potentially dangerous

Yes! Look, no-one other than you has sufficient access to your car to answer those queries!

Well, I know now it’s completely disintegrated: time to buy a new turbo...can I use any PD130? Or does it have to be the same engine code, BLT?

Any PD130

Oops, sorry to read that.

Any turbo for  ASZ or BLT on the Polo/Ibiza/Fabia platform. Should be a Borg Warner/KKK brand (BV39).

Oh no, just bought a Passat turbo based on what I understood from sepulchrave lol. I'll keep looking then, thanks.

So if I find an ASZ Golf turbo for example, its not compatible?

It'll fit just fine to your manifold, don't worry about it, the engines are all exactly the same in the VAG range. No idea why vindaloo is trying to put the wind up you. Hey, that rhymes.

No worries, I've just ended up buying one off a Fabia and I'll cancel my other one.  I work in IT and while I love cars, Im not so technical when it comes to engine parts etc. My thinking was that if it was a Passat turbo, it should in theory not have been ragged as much as a Fabia vRS would've been haha. Cant complain, its on 180K now and its presumably been thrashed its entire life.

Have to say im VERY tempted by a hybrid, there's one on ebay for 370 or so. Probably not worth toying around as I have a feeling it would end up being a money pit

You'd need another intercooler and a remap to make the hybrid work plus it would probably overwhelm your clutch so £370 is just the tip of an iceberg of expense if you go that way.

No wind anywhere.... Unless it's as a result of the balti botty!

Exhaust manifold is integrated with the turbo on the Fabia VRS, Ibiza FR TDi. Mk4 platform and Passat platform cars tend to have the separate manifolds and turbos.

@OP: Hybrid is a slippery and expensive slope for a car/platform that's at least 12 years old. Could get similar results with far less effort on a VW Jetta PD140 from around 2007-2009.

It’s okay, I’ve fitted a second hand turbo from a seat Córdoba. He had to take the manifold/inlet side off from my old one and replace on this one as I think the EGR was positioned slightly differently. It sounds very different from my old one, perhaps it was always wonky and on its way out haha. Before there was a whooshing sound whereas now there is a faint whine. Power seems the same. Can’t complain as turbo was £110 and mechanic charged £160 Labour.

Hopefully this will give me another 20k miles at least and I’ll be happy... now just to fix the suspension issues 🙄

No it's not, the turbos are all the same, they just bolt onto slightly different manifolds, some need clocking to fit the Fabia correctly.

It's clearly visible, there are bolts holding the turbo and VNT mechanism into the manifold housing, they also hold the heat shield in place, these usually need clocking if you fit a different turbo like the PD160 or a hybrid.

Remember it's the compressor wheel and housing that is different on larger turbos, the VNT and exhaust turbine remain the same size.

So the manifold part does not contain the turbine, it just looks like it does? Because my mechanic said he had to switch the manifold to make it fit, and said that part had to come off. My exhaust is now smokey and seems my engine is burning oil on this turbo.... the smoke is white, not sure if Id say blue but almost.

It's just a housing, the VNT mechanism is mounted on a back plate with the exducer in the centre, the back plate mounts to the round cast iron housing which is part of the manifold. The complete turbo and VNT are still a separate assembly.
