hand brake seized

Featured Replies

any one suffered from handbrake siezing during parking on a fabia 1.4 mpi. The rear shoes don't release till you exercise the handbrake.

How long does it need to be left like that before they sieze?

SWMBO had the exact same problem with her 1.4 MPI.

Solution:

1.Call the AA

2. AA man removes wheel and proceeds to set about the brake hub with BFH

3. All good

was he RAF trained ?:D sounds to me like pads sticking on the disc after being wet/damp , my VRS has just done it because i have to drive through a large puddle (read lake) to park up at work

Wont be pads sticking on an MPi thats for sure.

Id say give the rear brakes a good clean up and adjust them. A little bit of copper slip where the shoes contact the back plate should help.

i was going to put in pads/shoes but at the last moment i thought all fabias come with rear discs :o it will be a similar sort of thing though won't it ,shoes sticking on drum ?:(

Had my Scoob's pads stick to the discs after being left for a week of vRS driving last week. Full power, drop the clutch, ping, ping, ping, ping, all 4 were locked on. Naturally I had to take it for a thorough 'drive' to clean off all the rust on the disks but strangely I am finding I enjoy my vRS more, possibly because to enjoy the Scoob you need to drive like your pants are on fire and the vRS is much less full on and relaxing. It may have less than half the power but 95% of the time I'd rather be in the vRS. Maybe I'm getting old :)

If the rear brake seize when parked there is an easy answer - remove the wheel trim, put a socket spanner on one of the wheel bolts and hit it with a hammer. The drum rings like a bell and the shoes release themselves.

Had this happen to me this morning. Car not used for 4 days and left with handbrake on. Wouldn't budge, even with loads of revs. I thought about the hammer technique but then decided on one last try at dislodging it by rocking the car vigourously. Heard a "ping" and got back in the driver's seat and away it went.

Ours has been doing this with the wet and cold weather

I find lots of revs and quick off clutch makes a bang noise and they are going again :D

my VRS has done this after 3 days on the drive over xmas - dad went to pull it off the drive this morning cos I've got a flat rear tyre (never rains but it pours!) and he thought WTF is this car glued to the drive.

Should I get my VAG specialist Midland VW to give the rear brakes/pads a looking at when its up there Saturday?

My 1.4TDI has occasionally done this - interestingly only seem to notice it when parked overnight and in wet weather - similar symptom to that experienced by certain Vauxhalls in the wet - explained by AA as the shoes glueing themselves to the drum - especially as cheaper shoes used ---but mines only got 29k on the original ones - unless some of the uber techies could explain why ??

Yes if you have a spare

cheers national - I've got it booked in for my Jody at Midland to give it the once over since buying it. I have all the receipts for the work that has been carried out on the car since the previous owner had it. I will look back through this and see if any of the pads have been changed and if not spend some wonga.
