1.6 tdi DSG

Featured Replies

Anybody got any experience of life with a 1.6tdi with the 7 speed DSG?

looking at changing my car, my clutch knee has had it so looking at an auto, also the missus cannot drive a manual so going to get her passed her test on an auto. The future is auto anyways once we are running about in electric cars.

The car in question is a 2017 audi a3 sport 1.6 tdi dsg sportback, wow that was a mouthfull!

i had a limited choice of cars available, they needed to be big enough for a pram, 5 doors, not too small but not too big for a learner, automatic, cheap to insure. I think the A3 sportback fits the bill, if it was just for myself i would of picked a bigger car / SUV but need to keep smaller for the OT.

obviously as we are in lockdown i cannot test drive said car but just wondered if anybody had any experience of how the 1.6 tdi matches up to DSG 7 speed, i think the bhp is either 108 or 110 but not clear on that front.

You just buy the same lottery ticket you get with any DQ200 DSG which Audi happen to call a s-tronic.

Even on a 2017 Audi they have the same odds of being a problem one as when called a DSG in a VW, Skoda or SEAT.

You want an extended warranty that covers the s-tronic / dsg.

Are they rubbish?

may go for 24 month warranty that the dealer is offering but will have to read the t’s and c’s on hold at the minute as dealership is in lockdown, the car is a 66 plate but MY2017 as is the facelifted A3

They are not rubbish, but last year and this there were still 2016 Octavia & Superb owners having issues with 1.6 TDI DSG's that were out of warranty and Skoda could not care less.

There was nothing improved with 2017 DQ200's the only difference was maybe still covered by Manufacturers Warranty.

Maybe 98% are issue free.  Just a pity that VW Group do not care about those with the 2% that are not.

Skoda produce over 2,200 DQ200 DSG's a day.  2% is a fair amount, or even 1%.

@logiclee

might see this, he has knowledge and experience with them.

@Roottootemblowinootsoot You mention TSi DSG in your above post. Op is on about TDi.........

Are they same DSG box with either engine, or was it typo???? just for clarification ;)

Yes sorry a typo. there are no 1.6 TSI's.

DQ200 DSG's (s-stronics) are used in 28 applications. It used to be 48 different vehicles.  They do not all run the same ECU software.

All can be equally involved in the 2009-2012 world recall / European Service Campaign, or the Service Campaign '34H5' 2013-2015.

Or the Australian Recall from 2019 on some 2009-2016, or the 'Slipping Clutch issue, 2015-2019.

Even the software glitches with some 2018-2020.

They are not rubbish to drive, a little less smooth than a wet clutch DSG or conventional torque converter auto but you soon learn to adapt your driving style.

Economy of the 1.6TDi DSG is excellent on run but I'd still go with a TSi for urban use.

The DQ200 is a reliability time bomb though. I've owned and run 5 (2011-2017) and 4 of them required warranty work, the last one over £5500 worth of warranty work.

So will I ever own another one? No.

If an A3 is your goal then get a 2.0 which comes with the more reliable and smoother wet clutch DSG.

I was more looking at it from an insurance perspective getting a learner on a 2.0 tdi is monopoly money.

is there a service schedule for the dsg on the 1.6?

and as for tsi’s i currently have a 1.5 tsi and i would not go for another, they are awful engines.

No Servicing Schedule / Guidelines or Recommendations.  They are left well alone.

I like a 1.4 TSI with a DQ200 DSG, but you are having to just trust on finding a good one.  The odds are in your favour.

But then if you have to avoid, Evans Halshaw, Arnold Clark, Parks and maybe West End you get less to choose from.

So far 1.0 TSI's with DQ200 DSG's are fairing quite well.

Just maybe go for a 1.0TSI 113-115ps & pre GPF fitted in 2018.

My current car is on a lease deal ends nov 2020 but i have been given voluntary termination or something along those lines as i have had a change in circumstance (knee operation on my left leg) so to get out of the lease the only way is to take another car from them (vw finance)

so the car is local and i actually quite like the look of it. Will be a decent upgrade in interior quality if nothing else. You are right 98% of them will probably be fine its the 2% that will go wrong and owners will voice their concerns on the interweb. It’s the same with any car look deep enough and you will always find an issue. Owners don’t come on and comment that their car is faultless.

i guess will just have to wait until after lockdown and see what the car is like to drive and what their 24 month warranty includes.

the dealership is seat in carlisle which is a bristol street motors / vertu dealership. All dealerships are crooks so i’m not too concerned which one i will be buying it off.

Sorry it is not the same.  It is very much not the same.

VW / Skoda / SEAT / Audi fight you all the way and accept no 'Known issues',   They will even sell you an Extended Warranty then refuse a claim because of Known Issues.

PS.

If the failure rate was only 2% with DQ200's from 2017 VW would be delighted.

Pre that the failure rate globally is huge.

If VW were actually 'Honest and open' that would be a starter.  It is not overblown online and in forums,

it is very much closed down by Dealers employees and Customer Services that are happy to say 'they all do that',

or 'Driver error'.

Hi BigJasse88, I am on my second 1,6tdi DSG, the first was in a 12 plate Octavia mk2 elegance estate and the current one is a mk3 Octavia estate elegance. Traded the first one in at around 80k miles. two issues in the time I owned it, once the turbo actuator stuck and the AA sorted it at the roadside (during warranty) second issue was an oil leak from the intercooler (just out of warranty) Dealer charged me £115 to replace it. Current Mk3 is a 14 plate on 162,000 miles and no issues with the motor or the gearbox, DSG gearbox has had the updated software.

The one im looking at has 58k which is quite high but seems like it will have some longevity left in it, higher mileage = lower purchase price.

i will probably only put 10k a year on it, maybe less so should last a few years i hope

How comes you're looking at a diesel with that mileage?

Would have thought petrol would be more suitable.

Well i currently have a 1.5 tsi but it is a turkey and do not fancy another one so that takes you away from the newer VAG group. Don’t really fancy a 1.0tsi 3 banger as i feel it will just be too gutless torque wise.

i have had lots of diesels in the past, Newer petrol turbos claim these amazing mpg’s but in the real world they never live up to it. The 1.5tsi leon i have claims 52mpg combined, my long term average is 37 mpg, i fully believe a 1.6 tdi will see me high 40’s / 50’s.

since everybody is hating on diesels these days the purchase price is not any more than the equivalent petrol 2nd hand so they make sense to me.

the car will usually only get used on a weekend for trips and days away so when it does get used it will be doing half decent runs.

1.4TSi seem to come very well recommended. Not sure what they are available in though.

1.4 TSI Euro 6 (Turbo nor Twinchargers),  Polo, Golf, Sharan, A1, A3, A4, Leon, Alhambra etc etc 110/115, 122, 148/150,

Most things before the 1.5 TSI's.

1.4tsi is no longer available on any Skoda made after around May 2018. Unless you want the complex Hybrid version of the Superb.

Many people think the latest EA211 1.4tsi (timing belt) engines are among the best that VAG made. Don't confuse with earlier engines eg EA111 1.4tsi (timing chain) engines which had the usual share of serious VAG faults.

Pity they binned it to make way for the 1.5tsi turkey.

They have re-introduced now in Australia the 1.4 TSI with a 8 speed TQ Auto. (not hybrid)

Utopia, wish we had the choice.

Yes I do. Been on here for two decades. Had 13 Skoda's and 5 other VAG vehicles.

Only major warrant issues I've had in all that time were on four DQ200 gearboxes.

How lucky do you feel is the only real advice I can give.

So is there any differences with the newer gearboxes? I find it strange that these issues have been on the go since 2009 and you can still buy a 1.6 tdi with a dsg new, surely there must of been a fix along the way?

There have been tweeks and recalls and oil changes and software changes and clutchpack changes over the years.

My only faultless DQ200 was on a 2009 Golf.

Problem boxes were on 2011 Fabia, 2014 Octavia and two 2016 Yeti's.

Does not sound too good, what issues did you have? All major?

Kindov been put off it now 😞

what other cars are available

5 door hatch, cheap to insure, automatic, needs to be golf / a3 / leon size
