Brake pads

Featured Replies

I've been advised at mot my 2016 diesel Vrs is in need of new pads at the front. I haven't tinkered with cars for years but was going to have a go myself. Any advice on replacements..

Am I right in thinking there are two disc sizes so I'll need to measure my disc's I assume. Any help would be appreciated. Also is it straight forward to do.

Yeah two sizes, 340mm and 312mm.

You don’t need to change them until the wear sensor has detached, you’ll get a warning light come up to telling you to check break wear.

The sensor is on one side only, my 2014 has it on the left so yours should be the same.

you’ll need a tool to wind the calliper back, will cost between £20 and £30.

Thanks. I've got the wind back tool I had on my mk1 vrs 15 years ago so providing they haven't changed I'm in business. I assumed it was just the rears which needed the tool.

I'd check that you actually need them too. Testing houses are notorious for claiming "worn pads and discs" when in fact they are worn as soon as you use them. No harm in getting pads and inspecting/replacing as required.

FWIW I am on the original setup at around 70k miles on my 2014 elegance with roughly 40% pad left. I reckon another 10-20k and I'll replace all round.

I think only the rears need winding back, due to parking brake auto adjuster. Fronts should simply push back, I recommend you open the bleed valve when doing this, to avoid pushing crud in the caliper back up the system and small possibilty of damage to ABS and master cylinder seals.

The callipers fitted to my vrs don’t wind back they just need the pressure from the tool to get the pistons back in.

Edit: I’m talking about fronts

If it's any help for you to find the correct pads I personally use this site which tells you all the options on your car:

 https://carinfo.kiev.ua/cars/vin/skoda

If you look through the options it tells you the brake type code for the front and the brake type code for the rear. Once you've noted the code(s) you can then look them up on the site below which tells you the exact part number and the disc sizes which you can then further cross reference on the web to find the equivalent part numbers from all the different brake pad manufacturers:
