Steering Lock and Ignition Problem HELP

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I recently bought a 2066 1.9tdi Octavia Estate.

The vehicle is a machine and I love it to.bits.

The problem is recently bout three weeks ago the steering Lock wouldn't lock when I stopped the vehicle and took the key out.

But when I go to start the vehicle again the ignition barrel will not turn and I can't start the car.

Now I've checked the key to see if it had worn. It's fine. I've sprayed some wd 40 into the barrel to get and rust or dirt clear. I've turned the steering wheel left and right hard whilst turning the key and it doesn't still turn.

I did bang the steering wheel a few times whilst turning the key and it worked the once.

Obviously due to this coronavirus everywhere is shut so looking on here for some advice 😉

Thanks guys

Could just be wear and tear necessitating barrel replacement or years of accumulated grime from grotty key insertion.

Maybe persevere with liberal application of WD-40 and see if it gets better.

sounds like faulty ignition barrel / steering lock mechanism and needs replacing.

Cheapest option would probably get a used ignition barrel + key from the scrap yard.

That was lucky, I managed to avoid watching paint dry for 30 minutes and skipped to the 10 seconds of relevant info, they come apart dead easy dont they!

It used to be far harder but with the RFID immobiliser protection I guess that they no longer need to be.

If you are more patient than me and can see that I have missed something then please say but it appeared to be a case of inserting a piece of stiff wire (I would use welding rod not copper cable) into the keyslot at a certain position to release the barrel.

there are 2 bits that can failure, the key barrel or the ignition assembly.

the key barrel can be removed easily if you can turn a key and insert a piece of really stiff wire (I used a giant paper clip)

if the barrel is fine then it will be ignition assembly that has failed and you will need to remove the steering wheel and two anti tamper bolts to replace it.

i had same problem, ordered 2nd hand lock mechanism, all fixed and sorted now, issue was broken bits in the steering lock. Theres quite a few invaluable videos on you tube. None of them cover the full job adequately so Id suggest you watch a few of them ,, some relate to VW and Audi rather than Octavia as the lock is the same across the brands. I retailed the original key and lock barrel
