Leaking Fabia rear door

Featured Replies

We have had the problem a while. Checking today the water is passing the window seal quite easily and draining into the door. The holes at the bottom let the water out quickly but it is also going down the inner moulding and going into the interior.

Will replacing the exterior seal cure the problem or will there be further work to do inside the door?

Replacing the exterior seal is unlikely to help much at all, the problem is the age-old one of the seal between the ancillaries carrier and the door metalwork being inadequate; plus a design flaw where water gets inadvertently deflected onto the inner surface of this carrier panel.

Plumbers gold is the usual solution once the door card is off.

See many, many threads about it on here, including this 34-page monster:

There are also a few youtube videos on the subject.

Thank you. Job done (I hope!). Due to the lockdown I had to use window & door sealer mastic which should do the job.

Rather than seal around I released the inner door plate and squirted it over the seal as well as around, and then smoothed it when it had been retightened.

Most of the plugs came off the door card. Fortunately they did not break enough to need replacing.

How far up the rear edge did you seal?

  • Author

About three quarters of the way. I could see water stains going about half way up the front edge (the front edge of the window seal has shrunk away).

Hardest part was getting the right size bit on the 20 torq screw and prizing the door card off. Otherwise an easy job.

Tested and all is dry today!

Hi, I have the same problem and tried the panel off and silicon sealed up and around but this hasn’t sorted mine😩😩
Is yours still dry?

Did you seal up to where the white line shows in this pic?.....

Hi TMB,  Thanks for the rely. I removed the panel around 6 Months ago and could see somebody had previously tried this repair with silicone. I cleaned off what I could and used a black gutter repair rubber sealant going right up where you’re diagram shows. I’m still getting plenty of water in the passenger rear footwell😩. I might try to remove it all and then try to reseal it but it’s stuck like s@&t to a blanket.
would you recommend just a Standard silicone?

im tempted to just take it to a garage but some peeps are saying there’s still let water in. If anyone in Lancashire has had a successful fix I’d be more than happy to pay to sort mine.
luckily I suppose it’s only the one side!

Hey mate. I would have thought that the sealant you used would have been fine. I did use standard silicone on mine and it's been fine ever since (about 5 years). Did you do your fronts as well? They leak as well and water can end up in the back.

Not done the fronts or driver side back. Everywhere else is bone dry. I can see water in the rubber seal at the bottom on the back door which lead me to think that’s the door with the issue. Might try to seal passenger front if no joy.

i plan to dry it out and park facing downhill and see if there is any difference.

so frustrating!!

And you'd be right.

I tried drain/gutter sealant the first time I repaired a door. It rained that night, and the sealant seemed to dissolve! That was the last time I ever bought anything in a pound shop, I think.
