I've just become the proud owner of a (real) VCDS lead - a pre-owned Hex-CAN originally from Ilexa - and I'm discovering the joys of getting it set up with the VCDS software.

 

The laptop I'm planning on using is awaiting a memory upgrade so until it's ready I've been trying to learn ahead by running the software on my desktop.

 

No joy.  Software downloads installs fine but - despite trying to set up the lead via the options screen - it seems it won't go any further without being connected to a vehicle.  I can't fit a car in my office so that's a problem ...

 

Is this normal behaviour? Are there some magical incantations I need to use before life appears?

 

Also, is there an idiots' guide anywhere?  I've read the Ross Tech installation guide but it only gets me to installing the software, not configuring it.

 

Take the computer to the car?

Perfectly normal.

 

Just wait for the laptop upgrade and finish it off then.

That reminds me of an Arabic motto that puts in question if Muhammad should go to the mountain or the mountain should be brought to Muhammad...

 

I mean, how do you expect to exist any communication between the laptop and the car without having the car that feeds 12V to the interface and also has an ECU able to respond ? So you only thought about fitting the car in your office while having a PORTABLE computer...

There is an interactive tour and also a manual as PDF

As soon as you plug into a vehicle and click Test then Save, the software will record the serial number and you're ready to go!.👍

And by the way the not akways obvious but the ignition needs to be on when you hook your lead up and test it. So install software. Plug lead into car open option menu on main vcds screen and click test, it'll draw you to it anyway on opening the software as you have already seen with a popup. Good luck.
