car sharing - but someones been banned...

Featured Replies

At the moment I'm carsharing with 2 other people from work. So I drive once every three weeks.

One of the guys is up in court Thursday, 105mph in a 70. So will probably get banned for a month or two...

So I'll be driving once every two weeks, he's offered

I guess, how much public transport would cost for the same trip should give you a rough idea. However, I wonld't charge him a penny if he is my boss. :D

Bare in mind, it is his responsibility to cover fuel/transport for that week, not 3 of you.

He should be paying around 1/3rd the fuel cost to the driver each week so the amount he's offering seems reasonable.

thats what I was trying to work out! But its not just fuel costs, wear and tear and all that...

Any ideas what the court will do? He's was caught doing 104 or 105mph on the M1 in Milton Keynes by a unmarked traffic car.

Yeah but 250miles is less than £60 of fuel so allows for a little wear and tear money.

Depends on the current state of his licence but I'd expect I short ban upto a max of 3 months but could be as little as 1 month.

he's currently got 9 points.

I thought that if it was 3 figure speed it would be an automatic ban, + the points if he gets less than 12 months, i think he is lucky.

As for the cost, offered £80 per month isnt bad.

A friend of mine got a 1 month ban and no points for a similar speed but I'm not sure on the state of his licence at the time.

No wouldn't necessarily be an automatic ban, around 8 points and a fine would be usual. With the points he will get banned and fi this is the first time as he suggests likely 1-2 months. I think his offer is fair for the short term as in reality and you are only looking at about an extra 2 weeks over a 2 month ban which at 500 miles isn't going to cause much depreciation/wear.

I was banned (no points) doing a touch more than that on a clean licence. So I would say ban atleast for a month plus loss of licence?

He'd be better off getting a ban for the speeding offence as it'll wipe out the points :):)

If he doesn't get a ban for speeding he'll get at least 3 points = 12 points on licence = automatic 6 month totting up ban :thumbdwn::thumbdwn:

if you drive 1 week each in a 3 week rotation doing 100 miles a day i make that 500 miles a week so he should be covering 500miles worth of petrol atleast between the two other drivers.

in my car that would be around £75 a week so i don't think i'd be happy personally with £20.

just my opinion :)

hang on..if he is a work mate why you being so tight? im sure he wont mind returning the favour for the lost weeks he hasn't done. thats the easiest way.

Car share posters in work say 10p / mile, unless of course, you're alternating weeks... so that would be £5 / day or £25 / week for the 50 mile round trip...

that's an idea,

he's actually got 6 points, 3 of them have just expired. So if he gets banned, with these 6 points get erased?

Right, the judge has banned him for 6 months! So looks like we are doing 1 in 2, instead of 1 in 3.

Right what would be fair amount to charge?

I would take the cost he would have spent on 250 miles of travelling, if it were his turn and split that 50/50 among the two remaining drivers. So if for example 250 miles equates to around £40? (tank of fuel + wear & tear) - then maybe you should get £20 each off him when it would normally come around to his turn. (or if you're doing it week on / week off, you get £20 off him when you drive, other chap gets £20 on his go)

Make it £40 each to teach him a lesson. ;):D
