Mobil 1 oil

Featured Replies

Sorry to bring up oil yet again, however...

I just got my Octy TDi back from a main skoda dealer fromit's variable service and noticed on the bill that I have 4.2 liters of 'Mobil 1 ED' down as the oil. Has anyone got a clue what this stuff is, if it meets VW specifications and if so is it as good as the SLX Longlife II stuff.

If it is a correct oil can I mix SLX longlife II as a top up and if not where can I get the oil from in handy 1L top ups.

Dont' suppose anyone from Awsome or Lummox could confirm this is what you fill TDi Octys with these days and if so is that link to the EP product correct as i will pic up a pint of the stuff if it is.

On fixed TDi servicing we use 10w40 Castrol Performance oil.

On variable servicing and fixed PD servicing we use 5w30 Castrol SLX2 Longlife oil.

I was told that the SLX longlife II (which was what was used last time) is discontinued and replaced by castrol edge. The castrol website agrees with this, but on asking mobil 1 ESP meets all the VW specs so fingers crossed i won't use more than the liter i used between services last time on SLX LLII :D

I was initially worried that the dealer had just bunged normal Mobil 1 in my engine which doesn't meet spec but all seems well :)

I happen to know mobil 1 meets

502 00

505 00

503 01

I needed 505.01 as am on variable which was why i was worried.

The 5-30 ESP stuff claims to meet 504.0 and 507.0 as well as all previous specs. It's on the link i posted up :)

There are quite a few different versions of Mobil 1 so you need to make sure you use the right one for your particular car engine and service regime.

Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 meets VW specs 504 00 and 507 00. It is also recommended for use where VW spec 502 00 / 503 00 / 503 01 / 505 00 / 506 00 / 505 01 and 506 01 oils are required - but with a couple of important exceptions. It is not suitable for Unit Injector/Pumpe-Duse R5/V10-TDi engines which need VW 506 01 oil' date=' [b']nor [/b]for 3/4 cylinder diesel engines without Longlife Service/without Diesel Particulate Filter which need VW 505 01 oil. So this oil is NOT suitable for the the PD-engined Fabia/Octavia/Superb if on fixed service intervals even though 505 01 is mentioned in the spec. This is another case of a subtle difference between an oil having approval on the one hand, and being recommended for use on the other.

For variable servicing it should be 506 00 for non-PD diesel Octavias and 506 01 for the PD-engined Octavias. 505 01 is required for the PD-engined Octavia on fixed service intervals and this particular oil would not be suitable for that.

Ok I may have misread the manual when checking which top up I will need to buy.

Anyway if this stuff isn't for the PD and they are stopping SLX Longlife II what on earth do you put in a PD. Also if the PD needs 506.1 and this meets 506.1 then what gives as I'm confused as hell as this meets every VW spec I rad about.

Surely if it meets the spec it meets the spec, otherwise what is the point in a spec. Sorry but this is really confusing me now. Oil used to make sense when I had older cars :p

(See the product description sheet). It is suitable for all Octavias on variable servicing - regardless of whether petrol (503 00), non-PD diesel (506 00) or PD diesel (506 01) - and for the petrol Octavia on fixed service intervals (502 00), albeit it would be an expensive way of buying the latter spec oil.

So if the car (like a furby VRs) is on the 10k or 20k fixed interval services this is no good, but for me doing 27k ish between the first service and the service indicator comming on it's no good.

Mind boggles :S How random.

I'll update my statment then and say:

" this seems like a do it all oil for variable servicing and all petrol engines" then :).

Have I got that right?

I see what you mean about the exception, wonder if that is because it's too thin and so the car would drink too much or something :S I would hope that if you put this in a fixed interval car it wouldn't do any damage, but tis very very wierd indeed.

Sorry i have to disagree

If mobil 1 states it confirms to 504/507 which are the new spec then its 100%

usable in all previous 500-506 spec oils in all catogories and why do i state that?

Well thats what the new castrol edge 5/30 takes over from as stated by castrol rep the last time he came to my work,

Hence the long GRIPE i made on here last week about high prices and unexpected spec changes to the recommendation listings,

E.G 0w30 slx is now been spec changed for vrs 18t to 5/30 even though

original recommendation for last five years has been 0/30

You can use 5w40 5w30 0w30 in fixed and variable servicing as long as it includes your vw spec 500 thru 507

Even some 10w40 oils confirm now to all full vw spec numbers up to 506.

So dont take what vw say in books as gospel cause if castrol (main supplier)cant make there damed minds up then we simply cant take specs for granted,

you just need to look at 2005 spec recommendation books to 2006 most cars

not just VW group have had a complete re spec

Its all about milking the trusting public into thinking

It's what was put in.

I had a BX go on to 250k miles almost on a mix of mineral oils, catrol cheap diesel 10-40 and millers semi synth diesel oil every 5-6k miles.

However doing 20k miles + between services i'd want to make sure the oil is good

Sorry i have to disagree

I understand what you are saying about 504/507 BUT the spec sheet for Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30' date=' whilst confirming that it meets specs 505 00/507 00, also specifically says that it is [b']NOT [/b]recommended for the "Unit-Injection/Pumpe-Duse" R5/V10-TDi (VW 506 01) and 3/4-Cylinder Diesel engines without Longlife-Service/without Diesel-Particulate-Filter (VW505 01). I would look for another 504/507 oil which does not include that limitation if my car needed a 505 01 oil.
