tow bar wiring help please

Featured Replies

hi guys

ive searched the forum but cant find results for mk2 fabia towbar wiring and whether i need a canbus relay ?. i want it right but if not needed i dont see the point .

i have fitted the towbar and the electrics are just sat in the boot at the moment ,it came with a 13 pin set up ,i also have the 7 pin adapter for my trailer .

i have seen this which i presume is easy enough to wire .

any thoughts please ..

cheers

dave ..

What electrical kit did you buy? Any decent kit should have had everything you need to get connected up.

thanks for replying bud

i got this set up which has no bypass relay , there is a small box that plugs in with a buzzer on it but i guess thats just for indicator sound

Cheap and nasty. I suspect the box is probably a cheap relay unit that switches the lights on the trailer, using the scotchlocks to tap into the existing rear light harness. The first thing to do is bin the scotchlocks - they'll wreak havoc with the bulb out warning system. Really, you'd be better off not using that wiring kit at all and buying something like this instead.

wow thats expensive ,it will be very good kit no doubt but i wanted to use just the relay box if needed . i agree about scotch locks they're horrible things that allow moisture in etc.

if i rewire what i have to the relay box from ebay would that be a goer ..

thanks again

Scotchloks may well eventually cause erratic operation of the relay and trailer lighting but neither they nor the relay unit (which is not cheap and nasty) will cause any problems with the bulb warning system unless they were to  completely sever the primary conductor.

I have some BT glycerine filled ones that are very similar but are less traumatic to the primary cable and are fit & forget.

To the OP, I dont know if your vehicle uses canbus for the rear lighting but even if it doesn't I would recommend using that relay rather than traditional shunt wiring, any damage to the trailer socket or trailer wiring which always happens in time, water ingress etc will not affect the vehicle lights, it gives much needed protection and works very well.

The TEB7AS uses a minimal trigger signal (milliamps) from the loom to switch an output for each lighting circuit that will require a 12v feed from the fuse box to the TEB7AS box, it should work fine and wont overload the cars wiring, the only problem is the fog light might come on the car and the trailer at the same time and you might get some glare reflected off the front of the trailer, and when reverse is selected on the car if you have reversing sensors it will bleep as it detects the trailer so save some money.
