Aircon failed - two months out of warranty - Help

Featured Replies

My Octy aircon has also just stopped working. All the controls work but no cold air. The Climatronic display flashes for 20s or so on startup too.

It was serviced last year so shouldn't need regassing. It's going in next Tuesday to be looked at but hope it's not the

UPDATE

Bought a Brand New clutch (part no 1J0 820 811 H) for

The mechanic didn't seem to think it was that difficult to do with the compressor still linked in with the car. He did have to re thread the spindle' date=' as it had become damaged when the original clutch plate had spun off. I'd asked about fitting some sort of lock nut, to make sure the same thing didn't happen again - but theres not enough spindle to fit anything else on.

Good result :) :)

To stop the nut coming off mine was loktited, alternativly if there is any thread projecting hit it with a chisel to deform it slightly, if you have to get the nut off again you can file off the deformed bit

Glad to here it.

Mine unfortunately went due to a stone through the condensor (the radiator type thingy). That made it £700 all in :(

Or better still put a tiny hole through it then put a split pin in the hole. Do that on a couple of the spndles and even if it does losen it isn't going anywhere.

Now that I would agree is a very professional Engineering solution, the way they did it in the good old days & a castle nut should be used of course !!

The cooling on my 2001 TDI has recently died! :thumbdwn:

Before I go for a re-gas, I guess I need to check the compressor clutch thingy.

Can someone tell me where to look?

Can it be cheched from above, or does this mean taking the undertray off?

Finally, anyone with VAG-COM near Bakewell (Derbyshire)?

As far as the compressor wearing out is concerned I havent heard of one wearing out, its just the clutch comes off the end & as it works loose & falls off the splines on the compressor are damaged. Its aparently only on higher mileage cars, ours fell off at about 110,000. Best advice I can give is keep an eye on it, ours now has locktite on the nut to make sure the next one dosent fall off. If you dont work on the car yourself I would ask the dealer to check it at the service & if poss locktite the nut on

I assume that getting a bit of locktite on it is a DIY job at home?

I have Loctite and a spanner, can someone tell me where to put them?

Polite (technical) answers only.:D

Stick it on yer nuts then give em a screw :P

Just about polite and almost technical!:P

But seriously folks, give me an idea of what I am supposed to be looking for.

Seconded. I'd like a bit more info as to where to look please.

well there is a mummy bee and a daddy bee .... :P

Seriously though, I'll have a look in the haynes, but all you need to do is undo a nut a little but a good dose of threadlocking compound on the thread where the bolt closes and do it back up. You would do one nut at a time :)

Of course you could take the nut right off and put it in the nut, but this is easier.

Something I read on here ages ago suggested that the problem was due to the clutch wearing out & starting to slip, making it get hot, and that it was the heat that made the nut come undone.

Everything I've read more recently seems to suggest that the nut just comes loose on its own.

If it's the slipping clutch that does it, then I guess loctite won't help much anyway, as the clutch/compressor assembly will be about to need replacing anyway. If it's just that it comes loose on its own, then loctite sounds well worth doing.

Does anyone know which of those two it what normally happens?

Already looked in the Haynes manual, just says leave anything to do with the air con to an air conditioning specialist.:(

Well if you can find the compresser then you will be able to find the nuts. IIRC i think it's at the front of the engine on the drivers side, but i could be wrong.

Add another one to the batch, oddly also just out of warrenty...

A friend has just had the one on his car fall off and been told
