Help with battery management

Featured Replies

Hi there

Flat EFB battery on fabia mk3

Skoda shut because of coronavirus

Went to ProTyre and they sold me an AGM

Battery will not charge since the new battery is in the car.

Does this battery require coding and how long can I use it daily without coding it.

Skoda is closed so they cant do it plus they want a hefty £60!!!!

Is the battery just not going to charge? And if so I'm assuming it will be flat quite soon after using daily??

I'm a marine mechanic so dont really do much with Battery Management.

Silly old me thought that changing a battery in the car was as simple as it used to be (one out, one in) apparently times have changed Haha

Thanks guys

What makes you think the battery is not charging?

Agm does want coding. Cabot Lane have a coding machine.

The  battery had been playing about for ages and its four and a half years old so I just decided to change it.

Is that F1 Auto on Cabot lane?

Because with multimeter on it it doesnt show a charge voltage. Just 12.6v

With the engine running or not?

With the engine running. Should be about 14.5 ish shouldn't it?

Pull the extra connector on the negative terminal off and retry your measurement.

Only if the Battery Management System thinks the battery is to low and needs charging.

The alternator is an on demand micro hybrid system.

On a long journey with a charged battery the alternator might not producing any voltage.

Who fitted the battery?

I fitted it.

@Manicmechanic, to put it another way, in these modern cars no attempt is made to get the battery fully charged up, it will only ever normally get charged up enough for to not inconvenience you by failing to start the car.  If everything goes to plan, the majority of charge being put into the battery will be done FOC when the car is on the over run or braking.

You will always end up being a bit disappointed when you check the battery voltage with the engine off or even checking it with the engine running.

Now that you have an AGM battery in your car, which should be looked on as being  smart move, the car should get it battery charging section reprogrammed to change "battery technology" from EFB to Fleece (I can't say why VW Group need to use that description for that type of battery when other listed options are AGM Something and Lithium}. "Capacity" maybe if it is different than that currently listed and the "Serial Number" changed by one digit at least, some people will possibly change part of the current serial number to include the date this battery was fitted to the car.

Thank you that's good. I always thought an AGM would be better. It's almost as if VAG under estimate the batteries needed in the vehicles. This is the third car by VAG I've had this problem with. I dont know why they would not just fit an AGM to start with for the sake of an extra £100 or so

Do this as above.
