Is this something to do with the key?

Featured Replies

I was rummaging around in a drawer of random keys and found the item in the attached photo.

I have a feeling it came with the keys to my 2017 Fabia, but am not sure.

Can anyone tell me if it is some sort of code that would be used to get a replacement key?

If it's nothing to do with my Skoda, apologies for wasting your time!

Thanks.

That's the tag that used to come with VW group keys a few years ago now. The 4 digit number on the scratch panel is the immobiliser pin. The number on the black tag is the last  bit of the chassis number. Haven't seen one of those for years.

Many thanks. So nothing to do with the key itself, then.

At least now I know not to chuck it away!

It does also have the key number on it, so save it

As @Andymod said, VW Group dropped the idea of handing out useful stuff like that maybe as long as 18 years ago in the case of VW at least because owners lost them, threw them away and invariably never handed them on when trading in cars, it was a good idea but most customers and used car dealers are not smart enough for that.

Last car I bought new with one of these was a May 2000 VW Passat 4Motion, I complained when the September 2002 VW Polo 1.4 SE did not come with one - but no new/replacement tag ever turned up.

Interesting. My car is a January 2017 Fabia, so the timeline doesn't seem to fit.

My wife bought a brand new Skoda in 2012, so suppose it might be from that.

Or even from my daughter's 2009 Skoda, which she bought second hand.

(Just to buck the family trend, my other daughter bought a Hyundai 👎)

I think I need to check the end of the VIN on the black strip against all three cars.

I think the PIN think went many years ago, the actual lock number maybe not.
