One windscreen wiper motor or two

Featured Replies

My wipers have given up the ghost! They're dragging themselves comically slowly along the glass and stopping all the time

Maybe a stupid question, but my old land rover needed two separate (expensive) motors and hours of labour to replace, do I need one or two motors for my 2001 octy? I'm pretty familiar with the scuttle due to water ingress issues, so that shouldn't be a big problem, and there's some good guides on here

Thanks in advance if you can help!

There is only one motor on the front wiper mechanism, the most common fault is with the mechanism seizing up rather than a slow motor

Ok thanks mate, I'll see if I can't get into it and lube 'er up. Even it it is the motor it'll be good to have a practice run at it I suppose

I took it apart quite easily (stiff wiper arm spindles only held me up a few minutes) and greased all the pivot points with wd40 - yes I know I should have dismantled it and used better grease but it'll do for now - and lo and behold, working wipers! I'm quite pleased with how well it went

Common fault, that. Even I've had it happen.

Glad you got it fixed, though.

Happened to me too, I completely stripped it down greased it all and chucked it back. Was only an extra 15 mines to undo and put back together.

What sort of grease did you use?

Just multi-purpose grease. 😀

hmm, on second thoughts I think for the cost of 5 pints I will put a new motor in, because they're still quite sluggish and poorly

Because you didn’t take it a part, try that first. Take a picture of how it’s all seated before taking them arms apart, cleaning it all up and try again. If that fails then buy a new motor. Nearly every time someone has posted slow or sluggish wipers, it’s always the spindles and the arms that start to seize up.
