Lazy Turbo (vRS)

Featured Replies

Hey,

I've noticed a worrying thing recently.

After a trip of about 20 miles, at a constant speed, I don't hear the turbo kick in anymore.

My journey to work is about 1 minute of leaving the estate, jump on the motorway,

80mph for about 20 miles,

then through a shopping centre, and about 3 miles of industrial estate roads.

When I come off the motorway, I'm no longer getting the oomph, of the turbo,

and I can only hear it spin up with the window down.

(normally you can't miss the whine)

If I turn the car off, and back on again, it's back to life,

even done this once while stopped at traffic lights and no problems.

Now the car isn't really slow without the turbo noise, just no oomph, like it's not getting the boost.

any ideas guys?

thanks,

Stephen.

Could be a boost leak throwing a fault code, either a leak at a pipe joint or the DV has gone faulty. Turning the engine off/on clears the fault and you can carry on. You need someone with VAG-Com or a visit to the dealer, to read the code. Its most likely to be 17705.

:agree:

Best bet is to fit a boost gauge. Even if it's only taped onto the dash or something. Atleast then you'll be able to actually see what the turbo is doing, and be able to find the fault easier.

Its a common problem. Mine used to do it once a month but hasnt done it recently (since I changed a hose)

mine is the same, but i only do a 3 mile trip to work, all town driving, and most times the car feels gutless and i cannot hear the turbo spinning, i havent tried turning it off and on again, will do next time and see what happens.

is there a way of testing the DV or looking for a leaky pipe? or will it have to be VAG-COM only to check for faults?

and any idea how much it would cost to hook it up to VAG-COM at a garage?

Testing DV is easy enough, remove the top vacuum pipe, plug on a suitable pipe and suck, if you can its fooked, if it holds its fine.

Dealers dont use VAG COM but some garages like specialists might but most have the propper equipment now. Expect half an hours labour, around £30 + VAT.
