Glow plug symbol light flashing

Featured Replies

Car is an Octavia estate 1.9tdi 09 reg like many it’s been laid up for quite a few weeks back to work today 13 miles no issues but a few hundred yards into the return journey I noticed the coil plug symbol flashing ( pretty sure it wasn’t permanently on from setting off but will check again tomorrow ) now according to the user manual it’s a fault in the management system and will put the car into a ‘ safe ‘ mode to enable the car to be driven to a specialist garage

Well

there no specialists garage open locally ( CV19 ) and there was absolutely no loss in power or change in the car performance to suggest a ‘ limp home mode ‘

any ideas folks ( I’ve no diagnostic equipment other than a volt meter nor are the local garages open ) can I continue driving the car ?

any help much appreciated thank you

Flashing glow plug light usually a sign of a fault, hopefully recorded, which needs to be read

it can mean a lot of things, including a faulty brake light switch... or the egr is clogged/ failed..

it may also not come on if you drive it tomorrow, or any other day for 6months..

If you have breakdown cover you could give them a call,  though it's a bit of a gamble as to how indepth their diagnostic kit is.

A few months ago I got the flashing glowplug come up on the dash. Breakdown got half the diagnosis correct,  there was indeed a leak in the turbo - a/the turbo pipe had split.

Skoda also diagnosed 2 of the glow plugs had also failed - they recommended getting the other two done as well, which I did.

Hi

thought out of decency and maybe to help others with any further advice I’d update this thread

following that one drive home ( 13 miles ) when the glow plug light flashed constantly yet no loss of power or other symptoms I’ve used the car maybe half a dozen times since no issues at all

my question is ought I get the the car onto a diagnostic reader or just leave well alone ?

@davidwhite

you can get it olugged in but it mightnt show up anything.

happened with my octy a couple of time, never had a limp mode, nothing on torque pro and on getting plugged in at a skoda dealer no faults logged all it flagged was a 6 month old bulb out warning.

they reckoned the egr but it wasnt definitive.

only way to know is get it to do it again and then dont turn off tge engine until its plugged in "live" from what i can tell.
