Coolant leak vrs

Featured Replies

I had the coolant light on in the car and stuck some cardboard under it and I have a not insignificant coolant leak. That after using the car gets worse.

I very recently had the cambelt and water pump done, but the place I had it done at is a 2 hour drive away.

the leaks coming from the passenger side at the front, so radiator area, it’s dripping on to the little plastic tray there then off.

Can’t get a good angle to see/feel the actual leak even with car jacked up, will take it somewhere with proper ramps to get looked at but just wanted to check this puts me in the clear from it being a serious problem and likely just a leaky hose or connector or at worst radiator?

(Slow) Leaks in that corner tends to be the radiator thermoswitch needing tightening; but in this case they will have drained the coolant using the drain tap at the radiator end of the bottom hose for the cambelt/WP job, so check that's done up properly, it's a clockwise 90° or 180° turn (I think) to do it up if it's loose, while pushing it inwards, towards the radiator.

Here's a photo of a very leaky thermoswitch (top, centre, stained pink) with the drain tap out of focus at bottom of shot. This is looking forwards, from underneath car:

That’s great, thanks very much Wino, I will have a look at these specifically tomorrow morning.

My heart sank when I saw the coolant light imagining the head gasket had gone just after having the cambelt done! So I was pleased to see the coolant on cardboard.

Update on this, definitely not theromostat, and drain bit done up, looks like it’s the seal on this plastic pipe where it connects to the radiator as there’s no coolant above that.

Also looks like a bit of damage on bottom passenger side of radiator but not sure.

Interesting that the hole the drain tap opens up to drain the coolant doesn't look damp, even right up inside it. I wonder if they took the bottom hose off at the connector instead, and then brutalised the radiator when re-fitting it.

It does look a bit like that, seems reasonably unlikely it's anything I've done or that it had a leak before that they didn't notice while doing cambelt!
