Items in the spare wheel kit

Featured Replies

Had occasion to take the jack out today and found a couple of items that I don't know the purpose of.

One is a circle of thick wire with an inch-long arm going off at a tangent which finishes in a small hook shape.

Pulling off a plastic wheel trim if you have steel wheels, maybe?

The other is a screwdriver handle which has a steel rod with two sizes of torx drivers where I'd have expected to find a flat blade and a Phillips screwdriver on other cars.

Any ideas what these might fit?

I recall having a similar tool in my TT for removing the centre caps that covered the wheel nuts on the alloys.

On my Octavia that tool was used for removing the plastic centre embellishers of the alloy wheels which covered the wheel nuts, there was also one of the black plastic long C section tong things for removing the wheelnut decorative caps if the normal style of alloy wheel with visible wheelnuts was fitted to the car.

There are far more Torx fasteners on your car than Phillips or Pozidrive and virtually no plain slotted head fixings.

The circle of thick wire is for removing the cover for the rear lights at the side of the boot opening, and the torx screwdriver is for removing the rear lights for bulb replacement. The cover has to be removed to access 2 torx screws. The screwdriver is also used for removing the front fog lights to replace the bulbs in there too!!

Is there a proper place left in the foam for this screwdriver? I was not able to find it, since it is lying there...

It can also be used for removing boy scouts from horses hooves🤣

You need to be of a certain generation to get that one!

I am of that generation ! There were various others, too, like starting a campfire by rubbing two boy scouts together, or comparing a morbidly cuddly lady in tight trousers with two boy scouts having a fight in a sleeping bag. Oh, the memories, the memories. Neither of those involved a Swiss army knife, of course.

For me it was the strange curved tapered pointy thing on the reverse side of the old fashioned (to a young child) black penknives that were all I could get when I dreamed of a shiny red Swiss Army knife with loads of gadgets that actually had a use, nobody could ever tell me what the thing was on my knife aside from joking about boy scouts & horses hooves.

Fast foward 45 years to when I moved to France and would scour the rédéries (boot sales) and i found that the pocket knives that I was so ashamed to have were actually WW1 (& possibly WW2) relics & worth a fortune now like most things that I discarded.

It was actually for removing stones from horses hooves, as I'm sure you knew really. I would like to make it clear that I am not from the WW1 or WW2 generation !

Ah - Thank you so much.

I would never have guessed that, although I would have probably seen it in the handbook, if I need to find out how to change bulbs.

Now maybe I can help you there...

I would suggest it's a Marlin Spike, used for opening up the plaits of ropes when making a splice, a loop, or a fancy knot.

I have one on a large pen knife I used to use for rope work when I mucked about on boats on the Clyde as a youngster,

Mine lies in a recess in the foam directly under the wheel brace.

Lift the brace out and it should fit in a slot on the next level down.

That's tomorrow's lockdown task sorted - to check out the rear lights for the use of these interesting tools.

Thanks to all for your replies.
