Power Steering fault, 00566. Next steps?

Featured Replies

Hiya

Just bought an old Y reg Fabia MK I, the power steering light is on, after driving it for a little while it seems to be working fine however it'll stop assisting and start assisting after about 30s.

I had the garage do some work on it but they seemed reluctant to scan it because "it's hydraulic" , so after getting it back I ran VCDS-Lite and been given the following codes:

00566 -  Steering Assistance Operation

        27-10 -  Implausible Signal - Intermittent
01288 - Steering Assist: Signal too Low

        07-10 - Please Register/Activate - Intermittent
01290 - Reference Voltage Steering Assist: Short to Plus

        28-10 - Please Register/Activate - Intermittent
00816 -  Power Steering Sensor (G250)

30-10 -  Open or Short to Plus - Intermittent

The battery light is red then switches off after the engine is running. The battery fitted is a 40ah and looks relatively new however the steering did get better after driving it for ~10 miles after buying it. Garage said they put in ~1.5L of power steering fluid but couldn't find any sign of a leak.

I recall reading about some bus bar/fuses that develop cracks, where are these located?

I've gone through @Tech1e 's thread which is very imformative however I'm stuck for the next steps. From the error codes I've got so far I assume connectors need cleaning due to the shorts and the angle sensor in the rack needs replacing.

Am I close? Cheers.

That's a massive amount of fluid. I'm not even sure the system holds that much.

The fuse strips are on top of the battery under a lid.

Sounded like it was a bit off the cuff on the phone, bit annoying that I asked them to look at it and they didn't bother.

I'll have a look in the morning at the connectors. Cheers mate.

If you have gone through the steps, what is the voltage at the main pump connector? Ignition live? Pump earth OK?

TBF it looks like a PAS sensor issue, if it's original i'm amazed it's lasted this long. All academic if the rack is leaking however.
