Yep, it up and down like a whore's draws at the moment. I usually get around 38 and it's been down to 6, then up to 20, then it drops out completely, then back to 38. I'm with talktalk and they sent me a booster free of charge, even though I explained that the incoming strength was the problem.

Yeah i was always 40 meg give or take download and about 10 meg upload. Paying for their “faster fibre”

now i’m sitting between 6 and 10 meg. The incoming signal is also the problem here 100%. Has been shocking since lockdown began.

nobody to speak to tonight so they will get an earfull tomorrow. Provide me 20% service and you are getting 20% payment as far as i am concerned.

Sortov shows what it was mid to high 30’s and now below 10, tonight its sitting around 6 meg which would hardly class as broadband not mind “faster” fibre

I had the problem just after lockdown started, but only for a couple of days then it went back to normal. The problem came back last night, but I'm currently getting 37.7.

If i can talk to a human tomorrow i may end up no longer a member of talktalk. Patience is not a strong suit of mine.

It might be worth checking your wifi -  with everyone stuck at home you could be getting interference from other wifi networks - download a wifi scanner app on your phone to see if your network is fighting with your neighbour's.

Is there an app you can recommend?

I use that myself, useful bit of kit if you only have the mobile to hand and no network scanning software on a pc.

What about those that get 20% service 100% of the time? I pay the same as people who are getting 40/50/60+ but get about 12, The upload speed is less than 1 Mbit, its really pants

if your issue is only since lockdown started its because of then massive jump in contention ratio on the fibre/copper.

everyones at home suddenly working remotely, kids remote schooling and tiktokking all day and night, looking up bread recipes and how to drink bleach smoothies etc so network usage is up probably 500% and theres only so much bandwidth for everyone to use. it isnt your isp's fault, they may have no control over it as they buy access to the infrastructure same as the other isps. or had no choice but to throttle it so that everyone still gets some service instead of overloading an already crowded infrastructure

But it's their responsibility. They're taking payment on contract for a service and failing to provide it. Okay, so the cause of the issue is beyond their control, but they still have contractual obligations, and if they can't provide the service they're being paid for then a cut in the service subscription cost the customer is paying is reasonable.

If your online shop from Tesco turns up and there's no bread, butter, milk, cheese or eggs on the delivery, then you would expect a refund rather than just "Sorry, everyone else has bought it all." as an excuse. 😉

Yeah i expect to pay for the service i receive. If i am getting 20% service i will be offering 20% payment. Seems fair. A phonecall will be made today but from previous experience with talk talk call centre’s i may have to speak to about 3 people before i get one that can understand me.

It depends on whether or not they guarantee the speed, do they not advertise and 'up to' speed therefore denying any liability for fluctuations in speed?

The best you will get is a good will gesture, they aren't stupid they know how to cover their a**e.

yup its always "up to x mbps"

never gauranteed.

It's contention. So if you've too many people in your street all streaming Pronhub at the same time it uses up the local bandwidth.

I moved house at the start of the corona stuff and my BB supplier wanted to charge me £5 a month more for a quarter the bandwidth (and take 4 weeks to switch it on). I bought a 4G sim on an unlimited data contract and a 4G router. It's worked really well. I get BB (not fibre) rates (15-25Mb) and it has been more reliable than most co-workers BB connections.

Dunno about you lot, but I have a guaranteed download speed from TalkTalk. It is actually below what they guarantee, but it doesn't impact on my use so im happy to leave things as they are. It's not an easy time for anyone, and for £24 a month I could save a couple of quid and drop to the lower speed tariff and not notice any problem. But it's hardly worth the hassle of three hours on the phone or live chat to Dave in India only for him to misunderstand me and sign me up to a ****e tariff for the next 18 months.

I have contacted them today.

They have said there is a fault on my line but don’t worry the fault is between the exchange and my house but they don’t need to visit my house and will update me in 24-72 hours.

seems like copy and paste reply and codeword for we have throttled your bandwidth but we will click a few buttons and open it up again since you have contacted us.

thats what i got from it.

I see you know TalkTalk's MO very well!

I've recently changed to another supplier from someone other than talk talk, the broadband has sat 1 or 2mbps OVER their 'up to' speed quoted on the price. They've won quite a few 'Which?' awards for their service and I can see why!
they also mentioned on their website about OfCom having a valuntary code of practice (although I doubt TalkTalk would be so kind to sign up to that) which means if you get below a certain % of your max braodband speed for 30days and they havent fixed it then you can leave for no charge😉 might be worth quoting the O-word at them if it doesn't resolve.

I would like to retract my statement.

openreach been out today and sorted it, 2 bad joints in the line and new master socket fitted

back up to 40 download 10 upload 😎

At least you're sorted that's the main thing

Check with your WiFi software to see what channel you are on ,and what channel those near you are on.  Your router and WiFi software SHOULD move the channel to one not used by nearby networks, but I've found that it  doesn't always do this. Not had problems for a while, but it can happen that a close network can use the same channel and cause dropouts.
