EPC light issue

Featured Replies

I have an EPC light coming on with loss of power. The first time l thought it was that I'd by mistake pressed the skid marks button as that seemed to fix it.

But it started up again on Sunday just gone ( about two months later - )

I was told by a friend it was one of the spark plugs needed replacing. Aswell as all the 4 casings. Is this an accurate diagnosis? And is it summat my friend and l can fix easily ourselves

WHAT IM ASKING IS

What causes the EPC light to come on and for a loss of power to happen?

Can it be fixed by changing the spark plug and casings

and is it safe to drive slowly and locally

I think you're going to need to give a few more details

What engine is it?

What were you doing when it happened?

What year, what mileage etc etc

thanks.

i cant remember the engine size is 1.4 Its done 45,000 m,iles. The first time it happened i was driving a curvy country road when suddenly it lost power. i stopped and was told by passer by it was the skid marks button been put on by mistake., So i switched it and it seemed to fix the problem. That was about 2 months ago. Then on Sunday i was just driving along a dual carriageway, not too fast but not slowly and it suddenly felt like it had gone out of dear or something - same problem - and a loss of power. I was advised, again by a passer by at a service station that it was a spark plug - that you could see it was misfiring if you looked under the bonnet, and that i needed to get a new spark plug and casings from Halfords and change it all. Which l have npt done as i am not a mechanic.

i read what VW had to say and they say its risky to drive as it could have cut out to protect the engine.

and my usual garage has said they can plug it into computer on minday but that i should be fine to drive it in between times.

Obviously l need to stay safe but i have been driving it. But if it's hurting the engine than i will stop right away

You can download an owners manual from here: http://master.skoda-auto.com/mini-apps/owners-manuals/yeti
Make sure you chose your car production date from the drop-down box bear the top.

If your Yeti has the 1.4 petrol engine it has no plug leads (unlike the 1.2) and it is not possible to "see" anything ignition-wise.  The spark plugs each have their own coil which is bolted above them.  The plugs are supposed to be changed every 60,000 km (37500 miles).  The coils are not routinely changed, but like everything else failure can sometimes happen.  In this case just the failed coil would need replacing.  A misfire from faulty ignition is not kind to the catalyst if it goes on too long.

Although plug and coil changing is a DIY job for a skilled mechanic, as with all alloy head engines there is a risk of stripping the plug threads if you are not careful.  The plugs are buried quite deep and need the right size slender socket.
