2010 1.4 16V cam belt idlers

Featured Replies

Hi.

Due to a slight weep from the water pump, I am changing the cam belts, tensioners, pulleys and water pump.

I have done VAG 1.4 16V cam belts several times before and they have all had 2 idler pulleys.

However, on mine the small idler next to the water pump appears to be missing. Does anyone know if this part should be fitted - the cam belt kit has one and the bolt hole is there on the engine.

Thanks.

Engine code and model of car, is it a mk2 Fabia?

I have a feeling that little idler was discontinued somewhere in the middle 2000s.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, it is BXW code. Looks like I don’t need to use the small idler then.

That one was deleted on these engines.

My proper VAG Indie used to add the top roller to the supplied VW kit on the earlier versions, ie BBY as it seemed to cause failures but was bot supplied, it was only the roller not the arm, so he ordered in that from the TDI engine as VW Group never intended it to be supplied or needed as a spare part on the BBY, no comment about that was made when he changed the belt on a late 2009 BXW though, so maybe that comment is now not relevant.

Having looked at it again, it appears that this roller is designed to reduce belt flap on the unloaded side of the belt, which also reduces the load oscillation on the water pump bearing. As the Fabia’s block is still machined to accommodate this part, I decided to fit it anyway. With the engine idling, the belt flap is noticeably reduced compared with it not being there.

By the way, when I examined the old water pump, there was slight play in the bearing, so replacing it was obviously the right thing to do.
