Seatbelt problems / replacement

Featured Replies

Hi

I have problems with the drivers seatbelt on my 2014 Fabia mk2. The belt works fine when cold but in hot weather the belt jams when trying to put the belt on. It’s as if the mechanism to lock the seatbelt is activating. No matter how gentle I am in pulling the belt it jams and can take up to 5 minutes to get enough belt out to put belt on.

I’ve sprayed some silicon lubricant on the reel mechanism and also given the belt itself a clean in soapy water. This will fix it for a while but it isn’t long before it starts sticking again.

I’ve been quoted £280 by a garage to replace the belt.

Any tips in what else I could try ?

Has anyone replaced a seat belt themselves ? It doesn’t sound so bad a job but am slightly cautious of doing it because the seatbelt is fitted with a pre-tensioner.

Thanks in advance.

If the belt is height adjustable, move it to full height and see how it works then.

If you need to replace it, there is plenty of Mk2 fabias being broke for spares, get one of Ebay will be cheap enough, like below...........

Regarding the pre-tensioner, it will be no issue, just disconnect the battery "BEFORE" doing any work, and ensure all is back together "BEFORE" reconnecting battery again.

It will take longer to remove the trim than change the belt, but I would hazard a guess at an hour tops.

My quick fix is, Prize open the plastic covering the lower seatbelt mech at your drivers door, Blast the mech with wd40 and leave it 15 mins..... It last me until exactly the next summer lol. I'm sure some grease/was would be better in the long run.

I feel your frustration sitting there for 20 mins trying so slowly prize the belt out in blaring heat.

Fixing with a blast of WD40 worked until today. A really hot day and the belt is very difficult to unwind from the reel. Keeps jamming.

Looking at replacing the seat belt now. The seatbelt bolts look like a 12 point torx bolt. Anyone know what I need to buy ?

Thanks

Yeah, Unfortunately yesterdays weather took its toll on mine too. Certainly looks as you described and looks like a torx to get out the lower mechanism.

part number is - 5J0857702B and is looking around £60 on ebay.

If it has 12 points then it will not be Torx but "triple square" which will be "spline" I'd think - there is another name which currently escapes me for these bits.

Edit:- known as XZN just look up "triple square" and you will find out all you need to know to get the correct set of bits.

Yeah, have a look inside your door sills, mine was filled with that noise reducing foam in plastic bags.

Perhaps it was that, obstructing the free flow of the belts mech!
