The Fabia (1.4 tdi pd1) is dead....long live the Fabia (1.6cr Monte Carlo)

Featured Replies

Well, after a middle aged gentleman somehow managed to drive into the corner of my car two weeks ago, I got the news that my little Fabia is to be written off by the insurance.  Armed with a couple of grand payout from his insurers, and a few hundred quid in the bank, which I'd saved up by not being able to go to the pub during lockdown, I put down a deposit on this 1.6cr Monte Carlo yesterday.  It looks like brand new.

However I've heard all sorts of horror stories about this engine....bad mpg compared to the pd, dpf problems, egr problems (luckily it's already had this done)....but also a few people saying that it's a smoother engine that the pd.  I actually didn't mind the tractor like quality of the pd if I'm honest haha.

Anyway, this gets delivered to me in a few days time, hope you like it....feel free to offer any advice from maintenance to remaps, I'm all ears :)

nice looking motor!!!

All cars have horror stories, if we all listened to them all know one would buy any car as they ALL have issues.

Red/ black always look good on a Monte not keen on the red seat's ( imo). That other driver must have been doing some speed for that much damage

Haha, yeah I guess.  I suffer from quite bad anxiety, so I can't help worrying 😂  I don't think it helps that the first two cars I ever bought in the 90's (a Fiesta XR2 and a 1.3L Escort) were both absolute pigs....I think I've always got that in the back of my mind.  That was back in the day when I couldn't tell a good car from a bad car though....I don't think I've had a bad car since then to be honest.

For whatever reason, I don't think he noticed that I was stationary at the time, and had continued at full pelt 30mph plus until I was right in front of him and there was little time to brake or swerve.

I'm a bit embarrassed at how dirty my car is....I'd only washed it a couple of days earlier....the joys of having massive trees on your drive lol.

Nice looking car, check to see if it has had the dieselgate fix done to it. I've only had mine a few months but I've not had any major issues so far. It is a smoother engine than the older pd and I'd say I've gotten roughly the same mpgs to a 2l tdi golf we had a while back. Seemingly a remap can up the power to about 145 so it might be worth considering down the road (though i've not yet had a remap done.)

Good luck with the motor.

Yeah I’ve heard of the “fix”,  I’ve not read up on it properly but I hear it’s not good.  How would I know if it’s been done? Are there any obvious visual signs.

Yeah I was thinking of looking into remaps.  I hear they respond well.  It’s not something I’ve ever Had done to a car, but I’d be interested to give it a go.  Doesn’t sound like there’s a downside to it.

With the cars VIN you can check if 'the fix' is outstanding.

Cheers.  Do you know how/where to roll it back if it has had it?

Ask  someone that does Remaps in your area if they can.

“Dear Customer,
the service action for your affected VIN is already available. Please, do not hesitate to contact your service partner to complete this action.“

I take it this means that it hasn’t been done then?

Would appear not. If you want to double check you can take off the pipe from the airbox going to the turbo and see if there is a piece of grated plastic in front of the maf. It would seem this piece was added to mess with the maf. I removed the one on mine but I figure that caused the pending maf code I got today.

@DieselMonte

So that is an issue when the car has had the new engine management and the flow device fitted.

What now, are you getting another one to fit until you can get The fix rolled back?

I wouldn't say issue , but If you were unsure whether or not the fix was done (seemingly) You can tell depending on if it has one of these fitted. I took it out thinking it was just a restriction on the intake, not realising it was a part of the fix for dieselgate.

Granted I have it running without it for months and have only now come up with a maf code. (granted the car didn't seem to lose power). I'm still not sure the code is related to my fettling.

If you check the part number it comes up as a flow straightener/transformer and doing some research online comes up with videos describing them as being put in 1.6tdi models (and only 1.6 tdi engines oddly) along with a software update to bring the engine into compliance.

For reference this is what it says when I put in my vin.

@DieselMonte  Someplace Skoda should have a record of when your car was done as someone will have wanted paid for doing it.

I have posted that very video quite a few times in threads about the fix.

The reason the 1.6TDI CR was the last to get approval was because of the Flow Device.

VW started with Caddy and others, and early ones had issues.

Ive just bought a 2011 fabia monte carlo 1.6 tdi same engine as yours, luckly i rung skoda and they said mine had never had the recall done and she also said not to bother, apparently it make the mpg rubbish, it regens a lot more, rubbish really but as for remaps im wondering about a egr/dpf delete and a remap for sure

Me too, mine are like rubber bands lol.  I take it larger tyres would need a Speedo recalibration.

Yes ive just bought the car and its got 205 50 17s fitted, rides very smooth but speedo is out very slightly, a bonus is its not kerbable very much now cause my red one with the 40s on were awful

@TheRivieraKid

You will find that 205/45 R 17 or 215/40 R 17 instead of the 205/40 R 17 have the speedo almost at the correct speed and not over and not as much over reading as the standard size.

Excellent, I'm gonna need some new fronts soon I think, might get a whole new set....

....which leads me onto my next line of thought....which tyre fitters are least likely to damage the refurbished alloys 😂

Before I got mine I went to look at a red one with 35s on it!
