Reverse camera retrofit

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I know this topic has been done so many times already, but I wasn't able to find any answers regarding the following....

I have KESSY and Park Assist. Can I still do a reverse camera retrofit or are there any special considerations with the above options. Does KESSY have a different boot lid handle button as I can just walk up to it and open it? Can reverse camera and park assist exist together and is there anything different about coding for it?

If anyone can confirm which camera I need to work with a MIB1 Columbus and if I need to change anything else to retain KESSY/Park Assist that would be much appreciated. Thanks 🙂

You’re all good with KESSY, no difference there. Camera and park assist work together, it’s in the coding.

Several options for you;

1) aftermarket camera with no boot cut but it’s a bit bulky.

2) aftermarket camera with boot cut using the larger handle as the camera is more discreet and you can choose between basic and highline.

3) buy aftermarket smaller handle and aftermarket highline camera and swap the lenses over.

4) OEM with boot cut, lowline, Highline or Highline with washer.

I did number 1 and then went to number 4 with my Highline and washer camera and I love it. Boot handle is easier to use, looks better and the features of the camera are awesome. Was the most nerve wracking job in my life cutting the boot though 🤣

Thank you @SashaGrace for the detailed response! 🙂

Good to know all good with KESSY - wasn't sure as the cameras seem to be attached to the boot handle and it's great being able to walk straight up to a locked boot and just open it, would hate to lose this feature!

Not sure I fancy cutting the boot, so how bad is option 1? You mention it is "bulky"? Are there any recommended places to get the camera or a specific kind I should look for?

What are the main differences between the lowline and the highline cameras?

On a totally unrelated note my car battery finally gave up the ghost earlier since posting this thread and ended up needing a new battery - was still on its original approaching 7 years and 70k. AA callout and £35 later I'm now upgraded to a new Bosch AGM. Win.

I suppose the camera to use would depend on what you want to be able to see with it.

I've the lowline camera and it just shows the picture behind with the green, amber and red box. However, the box doesn't move with the steering wheel angle. No big shakes.

The highline camera moves the box with the steering wheel angle. Think there are a couple of other features it does.

Also, if you have a towbar, the highline camera can do the trailer park assist (IIRC). That's not a problem for me because my trailer is easy to reverse and if needs be, it's light enough to be pushed by hand

Smaller handle aftermarket camera (not my car as the colour isn’t conducive to showing the difference)

Available from AliExpress or from Amazon, make sure it’s not PAL format, should be NTSC. Get the adapter piece with it, saves you pinning the RCA yourself. Highline cameras have guidelines as I’ll link below but there isn’t a plug and play solution for the smaller handle to go highline, only by buying both cameras and making a good handle.

@SashaGrace how that's a demo video and a half

Have you plumbed in the washer?

It’s on the list, have a big TPS haul to do after I’ve finished the BCM install thats been giving me grief and has involved not one, not two, but three BCM’s!!! Update in my build thread coming soon.

Huge thanks again for the detailed post and example pictures! 👍 Going to get the stuff ordered for lowline and go from there. Never been fussed about reverse camera up until now but thinking it would be handy to have. Plus retrofit projects are always fun!

I had it put on my car because I wanted all the bells and whistles, but it does prove a useful feature to have.  In some car parks, those stupid little bollards can be misinterpreted by the sensors, but you can see them clearly in the camera when they go out the sight of your mirrors.

i would avoid this camera as ive had two now and got fed up with it failing (water ingress). It also sticks out quite a bit more. Be aware different model years have different cut outs, my 2014 is 93mm by 31mm. i think after 2016 the cutout for the boot handle is slightly bigger?

I bought this... this is the correct pin connector for connecting the existing boot unlock wiring without having to cut anything.

and this....

the freelander is the correct length but slightly wider, its a basic lowline camera with a smaller foot print at a good price. I had to remove some metal but not as much as the original Octy highline camera with the smaller camera housing like in Sashas.

I wired these two together and it was all plug and play once the front wiring was done.

So when you say plug and play, you didn't have to do any coding?

Asking as no issues buying and fitting it, just don't have the stuff to code ☹️

Yes actually my bad, there are one or two coding changes, but its simple stuff and someone here should be close enough to help?
