Email Client

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

Just a quickie to gauge recommendations for an email client for W10.  We've been using the in-built Mail and Calendar app since we got a new machine (courtesy of @robt100 on here) and have now noticed that it fails to download some attachments (much to my wife's annoyance given she hates using web-mail).

Currently thinking Mozilla Thunderbird may be the way to go but happy to hear any recommendatons.

Cheers!

I use Thunderbird it's fine.

@skomaz Another tick for thunderbird here. I don't use it myself, but the in-law used it with no problems when running their business. Just got to make sure you set it up correctly, it sounds technical when you see the settings, but followig a walk-through on the internet should make it a peice of cake👍

Thanks both.  All installed and up and running now

Sorry I'm a bit late to this, but just saying that I have been using Mozilla Thunderbird for several years. Started it on Windows XP and moved it to W10 a couple of years ago. Works fine with multiple email accounts and thousands of messages, so I concur with you guys.

I use full fat outlook.

It was an utter PITA to get working. MS are fecking shocking right now with their development work.

Stick to Thunderbird.

All still working fine (except yours truly forgot to copy contacts over from the old machine...   so that's a job for the weekend.)

Did you set the email system up as POP3 or IMAP? I'm assuming it was POP3 on the old PC and thats why you have lost the contacts. Make sure you set it up as IMAP on the new one, this means everything stays 'on server' rather than on your PC. So theres no risk of data loss if the PC breaks etc.

Hi Rob - IMAP from memory but it does an automatic set up now sowill check (I think the missing ones are those that weren't stored on gmail but in the Outlook Express).

Browser- FF. Mail system =Windows Mail. Would love to get rid of Edge idea of thinking it should start up every time I boot PC.

For info it appears you need an add on in Thunderbird to sync contacts with gmail...   but two options to download are provided by Mozilla to do this.

I'm in a similar position as to you were - I would like one email client for multiple accounts. How are you finding Thunderbird? Can you have 1 inbox for all accounts?

I've never used it before, and there seems to be a lot of love for it. Although it appears to have a dated interface from the screen shots I've seen.

I can't remeber off the top of my head if you can combine or have open multiple email accounts at the same time, but the 'look' can be changed completely. The nice thing with mozilla software being open-source is that lots of people have made themes/designs that you can use and make it look totally different👍

Were finding it pretty good and easy to use TBH and it works which is more than can be said for the MS Mail and Calendar app!

At the minute we're only using it for one account but I'm pretty certain the info about it says it will merge the inbox for multiple ones and will create replies using the relevant account etc.

I've had no problems with FF & Mail, even on multiple accounts, as in receiving e mails. As i use Yahoo, I find it easier to log onto my Yahoo accounts and sign in to the one I want to use to send.

  • 2 months later...

My Thunderbird has been working fine for years until 14.45 on Friday since when it has not received any email from my Yahoo account. I can see new messages in Yahoo webmail, but they are not getting through to Thunderbird. Also Thunderbird stopped receiving Youtube notifications to my Gmail account a few days earlier but still seems to be receiving other Gmail.

Hasn't Yahoo changed servers recently?   I seem to recall they did which meant the server details in the email client need to be amended?

I was wondering if something had changed at Yahoo. However I just tried Thunderbird on my laptop and it seems to be working correctly, so it looks like the Thunderbird on my desktop PC has suffered some kind of glitch. I will do a backup of the user files from the laptop and restore to the desktop PC.
