Car has a mind of its own

Hi everyone.

 

A few issues with my 2019 Vrs 245 2.0l petrol manual (5500 miles).

 

1) Idle speed is always 1250 rpm.

 

2) When driving and I take my foot off the accelerator 2 odd things happen. Firstly the car will continue to travel at the same speed as it was before I took my foot of the pedal (like cruise is on but it’s not). Secondly and more worrying, same as above but the car actually increases in speed.

Typically yesterday I took my foot off the pedal at 37mph, the car gradually adds around 1mph every 3 or 4 seconds taking me up to 45mph before I had to break. Strangely enough when this is happening the rev counter is still at 1250rpm.

3) When changing up through the gears, the dashboard indicator shows I should change down a gear, for example if I am travelling 50mph in 6th the dash is telling me to change to 5th.

 

Skoda dealer has plugged the vehicle in with no faults showing, told me they can’t find anything wrong but contacted ŠKODA for ideas. Not feeling very positive they’ll sort the problem.

 

Anyone come across this fault?.

I would ask Skoda to reflash all the control units and ecu with a fresh install. Sometimes it can be as simple as software glitch.

Thank you for replying, I will pass on your suggestion to my local ŠKODA dealer.

I’ve had this issue for nearly 2 months, I just want to get it sorted ASAP.

 

Really like driving this motor so hopefully it sorted.

idle speed seems a bit high to me. could be the common throttle position sensor which is built into the actual throttle pedal assembly. Could also be a slight vacuum leak in the fuel vapour vent system.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. May not go down to well but I will be passing everyone’s thoughts over to my local ŠKODA garage next week. More information is better than no information, they have no ideas themselves hence the need to contact ŠKODA HQ.

If they can't find anything wrong, they're clearly not looking hard enough.  I'd be giving it back, expecting a courtesy car, and a phone call to let me know when they've fixed it.

 

A car increasing speed when you throttle off is at least, not doing what it is supposed to, and at worst could considered to be unroadworthy.  In my opinion.

 

Perhaps ask them to put in writing that it's still safe to drive.

No could about it, it is dangerous and should not be on the road especially now that the details are in the public domain.

 

Insisting (not asking) that they commit to stating their position in writing so that you may pass the letter on to your insurers should focus them somewhat.

Okay - this sound like the throttle control unit has been miss-calibrated.  All modern Octavias use "fly-by-wire" accelerator pedals which connect electronically to the ECU.  It sound like either the throttle control unit either is not reading the correct default "zero" value and this is causing your default RPM to be 1200rpm instead of 800/1000rpm (idle). This will be enough to experience this fault of creeping speed increases.  

 

Ask Skoda Dealer to replace and recalibrate the throttle control unit (completely replace it) and then get them to synchronise and calibrate it up correctly.
