VRS Larger Diameter Rear Brakes

Featured Replies

So this is a really pretentious thing, but the latest thing I want to change about my car is how stupidly small the rear brake discs look inside the 19" Xtreme wheels.

I'm aware this is because most of the braking force is going to the fronts, so I'm not expecting any performance improvement at all, purely for appearances.

Has anyone done this already, or looked into it at all?

All I will say is be careful not to put too much braking force at the rear, as otherwise the car can be very unpredictable under braking.

sure you know this anyway, but worth repeating.

Yep, the Mk3fl has 310mm ventilated rear discs

Easy job, need Audi S3 8P/TT 3.2 8J/Golf R32 Calipers, carriers, lines, discs and pads and Golf 7 PP back plates and it’s all bolt on from there. Done it on mine.

looks much better! Did you notice much difference in the brake bias with this setup? Where did you source the parts from?

He's got a 230, so 340mm single pots at the front.

@TMac88 is there a reason you're wishing to upgrade the rears? Looks or better braking?

If it is for looks then it will be a costly change. I cannot see there being any benefit in braking for normal road use, as the 340 front setup on my car is more than adequate.

This shows exactly why I want to change it! if the stock caliper wasn't red, you'd be forgiven for thinking it had drums on the rear.

Does sound quite expensive when you add up all those parts though :/

When you say "lines" is it only the last bit of the line to extend the length over the standard one, or all the way to the master cylinder?

Also interested to know how noticable it is under braking.

Helps if read doesn't it

I love these threads - I mean, quite often I'll be walking through a carpark and I'll jab the missus in the ribs "Look at that car over there, drum brakes on the back - say what!"

Then we get a little closer and it'll be like "No way man, they are actually discs" and then we're looking around for more people near by that we can tell.

I mean, go for it - a very tiny part of my head does understand the thought process. However at the same time all I'm seeing is a lot of expense to appease your own view (because really, others are not commenting) and the potential to spoil the rear/front brake bias.

That of course is no joking matter under heavy braking.

To all those worried about brake balance, all this does is give you the 245 brake setup also used on the Leon Cupra and Golf GTI PP so there is no issue there. It neutralises the balance so the front heavy 340’s don’t feel so front heavy but the whole system is stronger than the 312/272 system which is more neutral out of the box. There is a difference, small, but I can feel it.

Only the last length where the join at the rear is. You also need to re route the handbrake cable else it droops under the car.
