Fitting reverse camera

Featured Replies

Could someone please tell me where they put the cables when fitting a reverse camera~

ive considered either side , in the headliner, down the handbrake tunnel but I am having difficulties with any of them and I wondered if anyone kn0ws of a straightforward way of doing it that would be great! I have a 59 Vrs Octavia  2.0d. Auto.

any ideas would be appreciated

I ran the composite video from the tailgate to the left side of the car body and along the roof line.  drop the headliner slightly at each end by removing the A and C pillar trim and feed a stiff wire along the roof from back to front.  You can then use this to draw your wires/cables through.

My video cable has since broken in the tailgate rubber gaitor... so I've gone back to wireless

Exactly my planned route, cabling along the passenger side roof join and down the a-pillar, and across behind the glove-box into an android unit (to avoid my dashcam power feed out of the fuses and up the other a-pillar)

Please do post piccies. Mines a combi, but I'm guessing tailgate movement could cause a headache with cable flexing breaks ... I plan to fit a connector at the end of the run along the main body - will most likely use a sat-tv screw together union ... and hide that inside the gaitor with the other factory stuff.

I have tried both cable routes and would plump for the roof lining and A pillar.

There is very little room in the bellows, not sure if there is enough for a connector, pulling through the terminated phono plug alongside the existing cables is quite a challenge.

If the connector will go in then it avoids a ball-ache but could cause another, strain relief on the connector or bending the other cables.

I went down the passenger side along the floor when I did mine, and then repeated the process later as I fancied reliving my boy racer days and installed a sub!

The cable I ran in broke in less than a year due to flexing.  Maybe a poor quality cable, maybe I left it too tight.  Maybe it will always break over time.  Either way, it's a headache!

Wireless is working fine for me.  I shoved the transmitter up the side of the tailgate alongside the window inside some pipe lagging for protection, and stuck the receiver behind the ash tray in the dash.

your fuel gauge / range would really bother me :whew:

Why? There's at least another 40 miles in that tank, probably more!!

I assume you're only joking so I won't go into it - but yeah,  fuel light will be on the dash so I'd want to get that off as soon possible , as the light goes on ( 80 miles on mine) I go fill up.  also don't trust that gauge.

Only half joking, I've regularly driven to the petrol station with the range on zero miles. They usually err on the side of caution, there's been plenty of features on how much is left in the tank when the guage says zilch.

Top gear did a hypermiling challenge once, Clarkson did it in a Jag I think and even after he'd tried to run out the tank and completed the challenge, with his guage on empty apparently there was 100 miles worth still in the tank (that's from memory, so may not be accurate).

Range anxiety is a thing though.

so is premature wear on fuel pump due to lack of fuel

Always more than 5l remaining when range says zero, has been true of my last 3 Skodas.

If you look at the stated tank capacity they give 2 figures one of which is the reserve, either 5 or 7 litres, that does not start until zero miles is showing, in fact quite a bit after it.

My last 2 I deliberately ran out to see what was the remaining range but they weren't common rail, I wont do it with this one but have already got very close by refilling with 54 litres, had driven maybe 60 miles after zero showing.

My MK1 had a troublesome sender unit for a while and that ran out several times. I always had space for a proper steel 5l jerrycan (the real deal) but dont have it in the Yeti unless I tipped it on its side and dont want to run the CR engine driy anyway.

I have always run low on the range but don't tend to let it get to zero!

Anyway, this was during lockdown so the car hadn't been/wasn't going anywhere for a while

Same here, I've never been able to get the last 5 litres in the tank no matter how close it says I am to walking.

On this camera topic.  What cameras are you guys using?  The integrated type that fit into the rear lamps or something more aftermarket?

Oh you can certainly get it in and a little bit more in the filler neck, all depends on whether you like to live dangerously.

Now I have a CR engine with the fragile pumping system which will run swarf through everything if its run dry I am a little more conservative, I still go 30 miles after zero is showing on the MFD though.

I have used 2 integrated cameras, the tailgate handle type on my last car and a number plate light one on the Yeti, I would only go with the former now as it gives a straight rear view, the number plate light one has an offset view because it is offset and makes it difficult to reverse straight and parallel to kerbs, walls etc.
