2019 sat nav free upgrades not downloading

Featured Replies

Hi newbie here and finding Skoda simplicity a bit frustrating!

I bought a 2019 Octavia 1.6Tdi Estate last week and im very impressed and happy with it as it compares well to my old Tiguan in practicality.

As part of the Sat Nav "Amundson" system I should be getting free map upgrades.

So i went to the Skoda portal  typed in the VIN and followed the instructions which said to clear the SD card prior to updating the 2020 maps. all Good except once id cleared the card the new maps won't download to the card or anywhere leaving me mapless with a empty card.

I could download the radio station icon so something is beyond my skills with the maps.

it all looks so simple on the instruction videos.  Im using a MacBook pro if that makes any difference.

is there a helpline ?  or anyone here who has overcome this issue

I believe using a Mac adds hidden data to the SD card which confuses the system in the car. Someone will come along shortly informing you what program you need to clear said data and all will be good.

Also it’s good practice to back up the map data on the card before formatting.

Thanks Kenny , for the quick response.  im beginning to think its more about the available memory on the SD card and the MAC.  Backup is my normal practice and will be again  if i ever get this sorted but Skoda clearly don't envisage any problems and its not in their guidance. Theres a lesson there !

Go to the VW portal and download maps for a GOLF with Discover Media, they have a better instruction PDF too. Skoda portal and download tool is crap IMO.

I would say to download to your PC and unpack the 7zip file there, then copy it to SD but someone Mac oriented may have a better suggestion, as Kenny R says, there is something extra you'll need to do anyway when using a Mac to remove some hidden files it'll add to the SD card.

Just updated mine here using Mac. Format sd card in ex fat format

drop the 2 unzipped folders and the 1 file onto the sd card

remove the sd card from the Mac (just pull it out and don't use Mac eject command)

Don't lock the cards read/write

this worked for me after many failures.

Sorry, missed that you couldn't actually download the maps

You don't download maps to sd card, rather you download to your mac then unzip the files (I use keka to unzip but there are many extraction progs) then as per previous post to get them on the card.

Thanks everyone  this is a bit of a chore

After many many attempts ive managed to download the maps  from the Skoda portal to my mac and its a file that's 13.26GB  the SD card says 15.7GB free but i get an error message of not enough space when i try to drag or copy it across.

The mac is about to go out of the window.  Can i really download the VW maps?

You can, they're identical files (though VW often get the new files first)

That won't help with your current problem of being unable to copy to the SD card now that you've downloaded from Skoda though, using VW would only bypass the crap Skoda downloader which it appeared you had issues with in your first post.

You can’t just copy or drag the downloaded files to the SD card, they are zipped files and require unzipping to the SD card.

As above, the VW portal is much better and they supply a pdf with full instructions and link to unzip software.

Oh and the latest maps are 2020/21

Once you have unzipped your files and copied them on to your SD card you need to use something like “clean my drive” to remove the spurious “extras” that the Mac adds to the files.

By the way the 2020/2021 map files compatible with  Amunsden MIB 2 are not available on the VW portal yet , Amunsden MIB 1 and Columbus only as yet

Hi All and thanks again for Info, advice and guidance.

Im back up and running although not without a lot of angst. It took 2 hrs to finally download the zipped file, then 2hrs to unzip it and another hour to load onto the SD card.

The problem was a sourced in a couple of problems . Firstly Skoda downloads don't like Mac and if you do use a Mac you need three times the size of file as free space to allow downloads, unzipping and moving to the SD card.

Even after all that I'm not convinced i have an updated set of maps as the version still shows the 2018 maps. However im not minded to try this again!

thanks again

That's incorrect. DiscoverMedia2_EU_AS_1430_V12.7z has been available to download on the VW site since November last year. I've had it installed on my Amundsen MIB2 since that time and it states in its internal files that it is ECE AS 20/21 which is the same info that is displayed on my unit. It's still available for download too. Maybe you're checking the wrong car/unit on the VW site?

Bigade 1,  where as you may have a 20/21 map which you downloaded in Nov last year . The maps on the VW portal for Discover pro (Columbus)and Discover media (Amunsden MIB1)  to download  were updated on 15 June 2020 and now say “updated  6/15/20 where as the ones for Discover Media 2 ( Amunsden MIB2 still say updated 11/17/19, doesn’t matter what car/ Unit you check

Yes I agree. But you stated in your post that and I quote

But  Discover Media 2 (Amundsen MIB2 ) from 11/7/19 are 2020/2021 map files which are compatible with Amundsen MIB 2 and are available on the VW portal and have been since last year ( November ). They have now been recently added to the Skoda site as well. Your post says they're not available on the VW site. Well they definitely are.

I agree VW haven't updated them yet but VW are usually about six or seven months ahead of Skoda so I would imagine the next version will be available soon. I suspect that if they follow the previous titles they will be called ECE AS 2021 and won't appear on the Skoda site until towards the end of the year.

do i leave evrything in the MIB1 and MIB2 folders?

BigAde1

I agree that the Discover Media 2 (Amundsen MIB2 )  from Nov last year may be 2020/2021 maps but what I was trying to get across in my original's post was that the VW portal had updated the Maps for Discover media (Amunsden MIB1) and Discover pro (Columbus)  on 6/15/20 but that Discover Media 2 (Amundsen MIB2 ) hadn't been updated since 11/7/19.

For your info, you say that VW are usually six or seven months ahead of Skoda, with availability of updates,   this is  certainly  NOT the case with Discover media (Amunsden MIB1) both are on version starting P94 and Discover pro (Columbus)  both are on Version starting P187, these have been added to the respective update sites in the last few weeks.
