TDi fast idle

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

My TDi 110 seems to be playing up a bit. Sometimes (not very often) when I start it, the glowplug light won't go out. You can leave it as long as you like and it stays on. When you turn the key anyway, the car starts with a vrooooom, like I had my foot on the throttle, and will then idle at about 1,100rpm. After a few minutes it will settle back down to around 900rpm.

If you drive it around while it's fast idling, you can feel the difference. The engine braking is noticably reduced, for example.

Any ideas?

Just found this old question of which I'm having the same problem.

My tdi's idle also has the same starting problem plus will go up to 1100 rpm when you come to a stop. Drive a little more and there's no problem.

This only happens now and again. Can go all week not doing it then 3 or 4 times in the same day.

Wife keeps taking the mick saying I must be resting my foot on the accelerator.

Help would be appreciated.

Could it be burning some oil.....? Although that does not explain the glowplug light, to which degree I am wondering if the 109 relay might be at fault, as that can cause various strange electrical problems.

Does the glowplug light keep flashing or does it light continuously?

If it's flashing, then the ECU is indicating a fault and you should have the car scanned.

If it's continuous then it could be the glow plug relay (180?) or the ECU Power relay (109).
