Afternoon all,

So the username says it all.  I'm a long time company car driver,  unfortunately the company ditched the scheme and now have to find my own.   Have been fortunate enough to drive a few company cars over the years starting with a Vauxhall Vectra (okay okay just remember it was a company car),  then a few Ford Mondeos,  followed by a 320D BMW, then a brilliant Golf GTD followed by a few BMW330e's.  In fact the last 330e went back last week leaving me car-less.

I fancied a VAG product as while the BMW 330es were great they're frankly impractical beyond driving 4 people around albeit quickly and in some instances very cheaply,  the flexible little Golf GTD had me looking for something like the GTI but bigger and on a budget and so here I am.

I hope you won't mind me asking some silly questions narrowing down my search.

Regards

Phil

Well, on that basis, you could do no worse than an Octavia VRS.  If you liked the Golf GTD, then can if you can find a Octavia VRS TDI184 (manual), then you will have a same good car, but costing a lot less.

If you really want to go to town, then try a Octavia VRS Challenge (245BHP).  There a good few low mileage examples available: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-search?sort=relevance&postcode=td145js&radius=1500&make=SKODA&model=OCTAVIA&aggregatedTrim=vRS Challenge .

I personally think that the TDI184 engine is a cracker.  You can find that engine in a number of other specs (SE L or L&K versions or occasionally in a car such as my Scout).

I’d have to say drive the two back to back and see what you think, the VRS is excellent and is a lot more practical, but the Golf has a good lead in the refinement stakes. That, and the fact that they’d dropped the 4x4 at the point I was buying, were the only things that put me off placing an order for a VRS four or five years ago.

Bizarrely I ended up with an Audi Q5. That’s just been replaced with a Kodiaq and the only thing that it doesn’t outshine the Audi on is the refinement, it does virtually everything so much better but seems to have a slight harshness about it.
