Just gone past the 2k mark in my 06 vrs. Is it a good idea to get the car booked in for an oil and filter changed now its been run in? Seems to be no intermediate service in the service schedule book.

I never, just keep an eye on the oil. As they tend to use a little when new

The oil will need changing as it's very thirsty for the first 5k miles (mine used 5 Litres) after which time they use next to none (Less than other diesels i've owned by some margin). It would be worth topping up the oil yourself or taking it to the dealers to do, but the standard air filter is apparently good for 40k.

I've had five brand new cars so far and have always changed the oil at around 3k miles as a well-known engine tuner said "Changing the oil is like having a blood transfusion and will increase the life of your engine immensely". I've never had a blood transfusion but this policy has worked over the years as all my cars never smoked oil and used a negligible amount, also, the engine internals were also VERY clean when inspected.

When I took delivery of my vRS in December I was going to follow the same procedure with 3k oil changes and do it myself to save on garage labour rates and the booking inconvenience... However, after a good look under the Fabia I just couldn't access the undertray without the car being on a ramp/lift so I did some research into diesel specific engine oil and VAG service times and found that diesel oil is more robust and used to lenghty intervals in an engine than petrol spec ones, in fact the oil (in a diesel engine) actually works better after some miles under it's belt. The upshot of this has resulted in me waiting until the service indicator points me to a dealer... unless I get bored and can't stop myself from changing the oil/filter myself!

I wouldn't bother personally - as long as you stick to the Skoda schedule, anything that goes wrong will be covered by your warranty
