Help. Full beam headlights not working

Featured Replies

yes the top cowl just clips off, carefully prize it apart at one side.

So if you do that, hopefully there will be a sticker with the number on it just on the top.

  • I've order a 2nd hand Stalk for £24. Just waiting for it to be delivered. Then I will decide if I will fit it or get a garage to do it 0   All depends on price as would need to buy some tool

I would definitely advise looking at the part number on ones existing part before ordering anything, if it's visible just by popping off that top cowling.   There are still other part  numbe

Would that late-May date be the MY changeover? If so, the 10th digit of VIN could be pertinent.

late may was when the facelift started I would think..

Interesing thing is, I would think the switches are pretty much the same, but Fabia stuff is normally 5J and the later switches are 6R which is Polo.

Anway, he could PM his VIN and then we would know.

It seems that there are differing units for cars with or without MFD features. I saw a seller in Germany advertising the same part number as I posted earlier, wanting around the mid £60's, for the part and they said "For cruise control cars and MFD cars only". (Paraphrasing).

I am sorry to say, I think the one I posted first of all has been sold now, though. Was a bargain at the price!

Looking at a few variants, apart from functions like cruise (Major) And MFD (Major) Some differences seem to be down to the writing/graphics on the stalks. Different cars throughout the VW range may use different images for lights and different type face so to speak, for the writing. This may be why there are so many variants, along with what was also called satin black. (Thought that was norm)!

There are still other part  numbers for the part in the ETKA pages for earlier years, 2009/10/11, so a tricky one to get right 'in theory' without looking at the specific car. Mentioning that for the OP @Fawnrush's benefit.

Some will probable be interchangeable, but I wouldn't gamble on it.

Again thanks for the  responses. I'll tackle the cowl tomorrow, but had an idea when I was looking at the leaver today. I'm now considering spraying in some contact cleaner into the switch, there seems to be a tiny space where the leaver travels  to for full beam that I should be able to get the straw close to. The downside could be it could dissolve any (silicone) grease in there, but the upside might be that grease could be the problem anyway.

Full beam on an urban car is so rarely used that maybe its gummed up with grease due to lack of use, surely a switch that is virtually never used can't be worn out yet. At this point I wonder what I've got to lose by trying?

Good idea; well worth a try.

So cowl first, then contact cleaner. I guess I better wait a while before testing as the cleaner is very inflammable, so I'll spray some in ,work the switch ,spray more in repeat, then wait half hour before trying it live (with power) ...

then use fire extinguisher and tears to put out  fire!! At least in that order I'll have the correct part number for the molten mess left behind

😲

Could also be a build up of dust and carp! I have had window switches that worked after a clean and they looked a bit dusty rather then greasy. As you say, worth a try.

Oh Happy day! 😃  to my complete and utter shock a few squirts of contact cleaner fixed the problem!! Full beam without without vast expense, and no further headache all round! What a relief.

Anyway as promised for the record here's a pic of the part under the cowl. I huge thanks to all of you for you patience and help, removing the cowl allowed better access for the spray, a component I'd never have guessed could by removed so easily, furthermore it has has also provided a pic of the part number which also appears to claim it was made after the car was sold  (06/2012) , again yet another anomaly.

I didn't mention but when I bought the car (Oct 2019) DVLA had it listed as a diesel, the seller sorted that out.

A Skoda dealer gave a ball park figure of £300 to fix this issue, it makes you wonder how many poor souls needless;ly replace the whole unit. That said the contact cleaner has probably dissolved years worth of lubricant that should be in the switch, so longer term I might get a problem on that stalk.

Everyone loves a free fix :)

(except garage professionals)

Looking up that part number on oemwolf.com tells me that it was superseded to 6R0953507C 9B9 (with an associated part) on VWs and Audis (no mention of Skoda or Seat, unless it's obscured by the advert): https://oemwolf.com/oem-parts/6r0953501c.html

Doesn't give a date for when that occurred, which is usually shown.

This post gives a couple of part number researching tips:

Thats the number I sent you in a PM.............🙂

ref your car being made, it was June 2012 same as the switch.

@WIno the 9B9 just means it's satin black, so VW and Audi changed the colour for their vehicles it seems.

Hi All

Swapped the stalks over still have same issue

No full beam when stalk pushed forward. Comes on then turns lights off. Leaving side lights only

Only full beam only flashes when lights are on.

Is there a relay anyway

Also a 7 at the end instead of a 1 though.

Will look at circuits in a bit regarding relay.

I very taken a another look and found a loose connector in side the headlight.

I think something wrong with the headlight as I've tried the connection with a multimeter and the connection is getting power. Would be great to know what the cable with the white connector does and where it should be

  • Author

How easy is it to change the headlights?

I think I am correct in saying its a bumper off or at least part removed procedure so worth investigating the cable first! My initial thought when you mentioned a plug that is loose is that it may be one to the flappy-motor. That will perhaps stop mains coming on!

BTW, that says view motion picture but I can't seem to get it do do anything, except enlarge!

Will look at wires tomorrow.  May have remove bumper to get headlight off to attached wires as cant see where it goes lol

Also thinking of checking the relay. But not sure where they are and how easy they will be to access

Fawnrush, they look short, so it ought to be to somewhere fairly near, perhaps it's worth using a small compact mirror and shining a bright torch into any concealed areas?

could you not take a look at the other sides light to see where the wire looks to be going?

There is a relay in the system in the "earlier" 2009 models, but was deleted with the Bi-halogen lights............need to be 100% when your car was built and "if" they are factory lights (which I suspect they are)

I had a look at the wiring diagrams, cannot find any ref to that plug at the lamp circuit.

Don't believe these where factory fitted lights as previous owner said they had upgraded them

Hi
I have gone over the connection with the multimeter and there is separate power for full beam and dipped beam

However when I turn the light from dipped to full the dipped beam power is turned off.

Could the issue be relay or headlight as

That's OK according to my reading of the MOT manual as posted on a previous page. I've highlighted the relevant sentence in red:

4.1.3. Switching

Dipped or main beam headlamps must immediately light up when they’re switched on (depending on the position of the dip switch).

Headlamps must switch immediately between main beam and dipped beam when you move the dip switch.

Moving the dip switch must do one of the following:

  • extinguish all main beam headlamps and leave on at least one pair of dipped-beam headlamps
  • deflect the main beams to make them dipped beams

Dipped beam headlamps can remain on or switch off when main beam is selected.

Headlamps are not needed on vehicles first used before 1 January 1931.

When optional headlamps are fitted:

  • if one is fitted it must dip
  • if 2 are fitted, either both must dip or one must dip and the other switch off
Defect Category
(a) Headlamp ‘on’ switch does not operate in accordance with the requirements Minor
(b) Headlamp ‘dip’ switch does not operate in accordance with the requirements Major
