Check/replace the fuse if you haven't already, relay coil fuse is number 10 in the e-box, should be 5-amp rated. Look for corrosion or looseness of contacts, as well as fuse itself. If that is OK

  • It's quite probable that the ECU has more than 1 12v supply to it, but you need the wiring diagram ( which Wino may have access to ) to see.   Also might be worth removing the battery lead f

Are you sure it wasn't round the outside edge, outside all the screws, sealing the back cover of the ECU where the two halves of the case meet?  In which case, it probably isn't replaceable other than by dribbling some new silicone round there, like the edging round your bath/wall junction?  Speculating wildly here.

to be honest Wino thats what might have to happen

Certainly looks like the ECU is out to lunch.

Given the other modules (ie: abs) on the drive canbus are present, that suggests the can gateway and its wiring are good.

I'd be verifying the power(s), ground(s) and both can high and low wires are happy. First with a multimeter to confirm continuity and then ideally load test too. If that checks out, it points to the ECU being dead.

I've just arrived in Kos for a week so I can't check any wiring diagrams to suggest which pins to look at. Makes me wonder if there are some permanent and switched lives, but just one is sad stopping the ECU turning on?

I had a company test the ECU and they said it was working fine on the bence but did say it could be intermittent but not sure really as they were plugging me to buy one from them for £250.

I need to get new connectors for my meter as they dont fit inside the ECU connector holes as there to small for the probe to fit in, I used taped on paper clips last time but it was a bit tricky, does anyone know the name of the meter probes that will fit in the tiny holes?

I cant do much unless I know which pins to check as I dont know how to read wiring diagrams well at lest I got it booked into somewhere in a weeks time but it would of been nice to have sorted it myself

Search for multimeter back probes, lots of extended tips show up

thank you Updown that search has really helped but I have now broken my normal probes and it was only a cheapy under a tenner multimeter anyways are there any advantages to buying a better quality meter and can you buy them with the back probes as im finding it difficult finding a meter that comes with both probes

Just a quick update on what it was.

There was no power going to the ECU and all the fuses in the ebox needed cleaning out and original fuses needed fitting as some cheap one in there were giving a bad connection,

The bloke said the other suspension was fitted incorrectly but I already have new ones to go in friday But he said the steering warning light is on and the warning light is the torque sensor steering rack warning code, No idea what that does, can anyone tell me please? and is it a sensor that needs changing?

Has this really sorted your ECU problem? I have an Octavia with the same failure. ECU can't reach by VCDS, engine won't start and the cooling fan comes on after a while. I just bought the car like this. (I know I'm a bit masochist :D )  Previously garage investigated that it has an ECU fault. They sent it to specialist for repair. They sent it back as unrepairable because it was repaired previously. I found few dodgy cheap fuses in the fuse box today. Might I have to replace them and check all 12V supply on ECU however garage report says that they checked all 12V and Ground on ECU and it was fine.
