CPU for dual streaming setup - Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7?

Featured Replies

I'm spec'ing up a desktop PC that will be used to stream to YouTube and am wondering about the processor. It will be used to stream live events (won't be used for gaming at all) and will need to stream to 2 YouTube channels simultaneously so will have OBS running twice, along with various other apps (PowerPoint, media player, etc)

Whilst the budget isn't tiny, it's also not huge so I'm trying to make sure nothing unnecessary is in there. I've got RAM and SSD spec'd and it's just the CPU I'm wondering about.

The options are a Ryzen 5 3600XT or a Ryzen 7 3800X, with the latter being around £100 dearer. If it makes sense to go for the 7 then that's fine, I just don't want to spend for the sake of spending.

Just wondering if anyone with more knowledge than me on the subject could offer any pointers?

Thanks

I'm going with option 3: Ryzen 3700X
It has the same core count as the 3800X, but at a lower price. Plus you could get the clock speed back with overclocking, or even just spending the money saved on a 3600mhz ram kit and making sure the timings are nice and tight. I'm assuming its going to be a self-build??
If you did decide on the 6-core 3600XT, id say dont get the XT, go for the standard, or the X, the bump for the XT is about 200mhz whereas the 3600 can be picked up for under £160 (almost £100 less than the XT). You would get more of a boost from good RAM and SSD storage.

@slicendice any update on this, did you decide what to go for?

Yep, went for the 3700X in the end. Lead times were crazy due to covid so not actually received it yet...but should be arriving some time this coming week

Glad you managed to at least order what you needed! 8 cores and 16threads should be able to cope with anything👍

TBH both options are overkill for your needs so maybe just as well you ended up with the cheaper option.
