Wheels and Bolts

Featured Replies

Hi guys.

I have a 2012 Skoda Yeti 4x4 2.0L diesel 103kw.

I have 16" aluminium wheels and got a hold of new 16" steel wheels wich I intend to use for my winter tires.

The question is: Do I need to change the wheel bolts ?

Best regards.

If both the alloy and steel wheels are from Skoda, they should use the same bolts :)

If the are aftermarket, you should check what bolt they need.

These wheels are OEM VW/Skoda.

Also ... there is a airpressure sensor in the car.

Do I need to change the valves ?  How does it work ?

The indirect TPMS on a Yeti uses the rotation data from the ABS sensors, there are no actual pressures sesnors in the wheels. You just need to check/adjust the tyre pressues and hit the TPMS reset button.

The Tyre pressure monitoring system on the Yeti utilises the ABS sensors,  so there are no sensors in the wheels or tyres themselves.  The system works by comparing differences in rotational speed of individual wheels.  If a tyre begins to deflate its profile changes and so it rotates at a different rate... the ABS system detects this,  and flags up a problem.

if both wheels are OEM Skoda/VAG then use same bolts - I did exactly that when I had summer tyres on alloys and winter tyres on steelies. Now have All Season tyres on alloys so no need to change twice a year. (I’m getting on a bit for that lark!)

I bought my winter tyres on steel hubs from an internet source. I use the normal wheel bolts from the summer alloys with no issues. These are not Skoda steel wheels but I suspect the bolts are pretty standard.

Its much easier to remove and fit wheels if you buy a screw in guide rod, about £8 on amazon or eBay.

I would say that a screw in guide rod is almost essential unless you are built like a gorilla and have three hands! Seriously you are absolutely right - anyone changing wheels should invest in a guide bolt (usually come in pairs) and worth their weight in gold.
