Help with Superb MKIII Upgrade

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Looking for some help with a few upgrades for my Superb. To make it, well, even more superb

Im currently going down a full stage 2 path and need advice on the following bits of kit:

Intercooler

Exhaust

Intake Kit

Downpipe

Turb

Currently I am getting a custom exhaust fabricated by Hayward and Scott in the UK end of September

I have found the following Intercooler kit that I believe would fit and has the Downpipe included: VAG 2.0TSI FWD Competition Package: https://www.wagner-tuning.uk/700001059.html

I am really struggling with the Intake Kit and Turbo...

I have no idea where to find one that fits the Superb and was wondering if you guys had any ideas or have already done this.

If you have any secondary suggestions for the Exhaust, Intercooler and Downpipe etc, please do let me know. Id love to hear them.

Im not looking for a crap load more sound, mainly a little bit more of a growl once i put the foot down as its a little....meh? I mean it sounds nice but just want a bit of a deeper tone :)

Of course power is the main goal here

Did you have a look on Audi S3-RS3 Mk3  / Golf GTI-R Mk7 stage 2 kits? I think they more or less share the same engine block. It could be a path to explore... if not already looked at. 🤔

I fitted the racingline r600 intake and its a direct replacement, when you say turbo im thinking you mean the turbo intake pipe ?

I used the Forge intake pipe

Part number FMINLMK7 as it is complete including the elbow.

Ive also fitted a Forge intercooler, id post some pics but it looks like ive reached a limit.

You don't need to change the turbo for Stage 2. A stage 2 280 should make anywhere from 380 to 420bhp depending on the supporting upgrades, if you want more then you are looking at bigger turbos plus (possibly) DSG upgrades.

What sort of performance are you after? You mention both stage 2 and turbo upgrade so it's unclear. For a stage 2 I'd suggest a DSG remap too which costs as much as the ECU remap (or more when it comes from the premium DSG tuners)

This is one of the platforms with most aftermarket solutions in reality, you just have to look at the Golf Mk7 R / Audi S3 8V items as those are usually a straight fit on the Superb too, it's just that the demand from Superb owners is much smaller than from Golf R / Audi S3 owners so in many cases manufacturers don't bother certifying them as Superb compatible even though they are.  All "engine-bay" items such as Intakes, downpipes, intercoolers are compatible, The difference is on cat-back systems due to the greater length of the Superb.

For intakes I'd recommend either a R600 which has a reasonable price and good gains or the free DIY intake modification (snow guard delete plus opening up of the front duct) which also provides some gains and is for free.

For intercoolers, the Unitronic one seems to be topping individual testings (MK7 intercooler comparisons) and Wagner is a popular choice too but essentially most will work fine. The one in your link is a I/C + DP combo but whilst the I/C is ok for your car (fits both FWD and AWD variants) the DP is for the FWD 220 Superb so you don't want that.

Exhaust wise Milltek is the most popular choice with a good price/performance ratio, they offer everything from just a downpipe all the way to a full turbo back system (downpipe with a choice of catalysts, resonators and mufflers) and are proven on many cars.

I'd also say choose your tuner wisely, both for the ECU and DSG, especially because seemingly EVERYONE out there says they can tune these engines, but as usual not all remaps are the same.

Any recommendations in the UK? AMD Tuning did my Stage 1 and have booked in for the Stage 2 ECU, was not aware the DSG had to be done separately but will need to get this done too. If you have any alternative recommendations, im happy to hear them. AMD did a blinding job on the stage 1

I apologize in advance if I am coming out a bit rude (not my intention) but these choices are after thorough research and defined goals that you're after or just a few days of Google browsing? nothing wrong with the latter it's just that there's a hundred ways to go stage 3 and not all of them are ideal for everyone neither price nor performance wise. If you can't provide more details about what is your end goal for the car (how much power, for what sort of use, how much racing-daily driving, which conditions) we can't provide any useful advice.

Reason I ask is because i have got a feeling this is a bit rushed: you had the wrong downpipe earlier, you wrote you're going stage 2 but in fact you're after a full out stage 3, then in the last item (the bigger turbo) you ask: "is this needed?"

Personally I'd remove some items from your list and choose a few others differently, some of which would command a significantly cheaper price also, but as I said before going into details we'd need to hear more of where you want to end up with the car.

Doesn't the bcs downpipe need to be made on site? if so, why not let them make your 3inch exhaust system - they may do you deal

I've been advised to get NGK R7437-8 IRIDIUM spark plugs for stage 2

I would imagine you'd need an oil cooling system adding for that turbo upgrade too.

Be careful with “custom” exhausts.

The Superb is a long car, which means LOTS of drone if one tiny part of the exhaust isn’t fabricated just right. And believe me I wasted thousands trying to get a decent exhaust sorted, in the end I gave up, the last attempt had 2 mid silencers and one huge silencer each side at the back, still unbearable under load. Super sprint and some other pre-fab exhausts are the best way to go because they’ve done a whole load of proper on-car testing.

The reason I gave up was that those exhausts are about £4000

Edit: The exhaust fabricator will say “don’t worry it won’t be too loud, and it won’t drone” but unless they have made an exhaust for a SUPERB before they won’t know what’s coming. Both the fabricators I used were happy with their work, until they took it for a drive. It was absolutely ridiculous and embarrassing. However when they first switched the engine on (mine was a 220) and gave it a few revs it was very quiet and sounded great - the drone and misery only comes when the engine is under load - any load - even just accelerating normally along a flat stretch of road, and the gear changes caused vibrations that made EVERYTHING rattle.

Never. Again.

Agree will keep my Superb 272 with standard exhaust because after spending around £1,800 on my Vrs245 to improve the sound the best noise came from the Airtec cone air filter with the sucking whooshes which even my wife liked and she is hard to please......sometimes.

I have to say that i'm pretty happy with my 3'' full exhaust. No drone, just a bit louder over 4k rpm due to the sport downpipe (catted).

But i searched for the quietest set up possible, and installed a 15x9'' muffler that replaced central resonator which is the most restrictive element on the exhaust line (after the stock cat). OEM rear mufflers. 👍

if it can help you i installed NGK Racing Competition R7438-8, but I can't compare those sparks to stock ones because I had those mounted with all the stage3 hardware

I didn't add an oil cooling system and car runs fine. the oil temperature remains at 98-103° C even with long journeys and with 35° C.

I had to add an oil catch can but it's only because I would like to try to preserve the valves since i have not MPI, but on your 280 with MPI you should have no problems.

of course a cone air filter improves the sound (or noise)!
