Change of mode

Featured Replies

Hi, I've just bought my 2019 Superb 1.5 TSI SE L Executive and a couple of days ago was on a 50 mile run for work, after about 20 miles the mode changed from Normal to Eco and the Eco symbol appeared in the instrument cluster.  One effect that I noticed was reduced power when pulling away from roundabouts.  Over the next 25 miles or so it changed back to Normal and back to Eco several times, I did have the aircon, satnav and cooling to the glove box and centre consul storage and was wondering if this could have something to do with it, could the battery be on the way out?  Can I switch the automatic change to Eco mode off.  Any advice would be much appreciated

Hi, never experienced this on my MY17 but I have the 2.0 liter 220 engine.

Does the eco symbol showing not mean that the ACT is operating and not that the driving mode has changed to eco.

Kenny, forgive my ignorance but what is the ACT

Active Cylinder Technology. When above 1,400rpm on a light throttle (not accelerating or going uphill) the ACT will shut down 2 of the 4 cylinders to save fuel and reduce emissions. It works in all driving modes including Sport. You can't switch it off.

Hi Shy, do you know if ACT shuts down the same pair of cylinders - or do they alternate? Idle interest as my 1.4 doesn't have it, nor does my Canadian friends' 2019 Jetta.

I would imagine it alternates between cylinders 1 and 3 and 2 and 4 to even out any wear and tear on the cylinder bores. When the 2 cylinders are shut off you can feel a slight jolt through the accelerator pedal as the fuel is cut off and the car switches from 1.5 litres to effectively 0.75 litres like a 2 cylinder motorbike engine. Eco mode is nothing to do with activating it as you can still drive around town in 2nd or 3rd gear in our manual Karoq on 2 cylinders as long as you have a minimum 1,400rpm (to prevent any engine damage) from the engine.

Always 2 & 3 that shut off in the 1.4, doubt anything changed in that respect for the 1.5

Can probably see at a glance by lumps of actuators over cam cover

I have a 1.4 engine and the change is undetectable.

I reckon this engine is the best engine I have had. With the turbo I find it bellies the fact that it's a small engine.

Obviously it wouldn't be for you shy but I find it's more than adequate for my driving.

In April 2016 bought a new Superb SE with the 148bhp ACT 1.4TSi which I did 16,000 miles in 16 months and it was quiet and very good on fuel (upto 800 miles per tank) but lacked any excitement so I bought a Vrs245.
