A Pillar Trim removal

I was told about this when I picked up my Karoq from servicing - seems to be fitted on the 2021 range but not, according to the service manager who has investigated, available as a 'mod'. A market there!

USB C on rear view mirror is £130 option, don`t know if standard on top of range models - its a extra for the SE-L

It's not just £130, if you specify it then you may be forced to add another option, the cheapest of which I could see on the Kodiaq, was traffic sign recognition at £90. The total cost for that power socket now becomes £220 :o

Very easy solution to removing the A-pillar trim - ask your dealer how it comes off.

You can do it yourself with the correct tools and some force, the biggest problem is not knowing what's happening therefore being frightened to use force. If you want to know why the trim is so tight then this video shows what's going on. VW models use the same common fixing method to attach the A pillar trim where airbags are involved.

"- ask your dealer how it comes off. " I did and he said "Don't try it - it is a nightmare"

No questions, your honour. Old video, seen it and not encouraged! 2014 Golf not 2019 Karoq.

This is not even remotely representative of how much force I needed to apply to remove the top section before giving up. I had four (!!) plastic crowbars inserted in various places and was laying on full force on two at a time. There's no way it would have come off undamaged, so I resorted to tucking in the cables best I could with the pillar attached.

I second what Scot says, in the video he has already removed the trim once so the fixings have lost their virginity, he does say you need to pull really hard.

I prefer to use my bare hands as I get a better feel for the force being applied, the resistance and any movement, looking across the surface for any deformation will show me what clips are resisting or sometimes where there is another fastener that I have forgotten.

Once the trim, or any of the trims have been deflowered the next time you can just rip them off with a confident flourish and little effort like in the video.

To update: As I said, I have installed the hard-wired dash-cam successfully routing from the glovebox fuse 47 piggy-back up to the A pillar with access via the dash end panel and 'lost' the wire in the gap between the dash and the A pillar. Only thing left to do is to 'persuade' the wire to remain in the gaps between the pillar and top liner and windscreen as it tends to occasionally 'peep out' :-). I suspect a dab or two of Evostick on the wire will do it?

Many thanks to all who replied and have gone before, especially Don.  Could have been easier, Skoda!!

@mjp99

So glad you managed to get it sorted, like I said before, I must have been lucky with mine (maybe the trim had been off prior to me getting car, who knows), but had to resort to the method you have now used for my sister-in-law's Karoq

Just to throw the cat in amongst the pigeons - why is everyone so obsessed removing the A-trim ?

I'm guessing your answer will be "So I can feed the power cable down the side of the trim and not cross the airbag". Would I be right?

Well ask yourself this. If it's so hard to remove the trim panel, and as above, a garage says more trouble than it's worth, then how in hells name is the airbag going to deploy?

Here's the bottom line - The airbag doesn't deploy from the A-pillar, it deploys from the roof liner over the window. What you see in the video I posted above is an airbag storage canister.

Next question to ask yourself  -  what f***ing use would an airbag be on the A-pillar? You have a seatbelt on, in the event of an accident, you're body doesn't reach the A-pillar. The Airbag deploys from above the window and is designed to stop your head hitting the glass.

NCAP test of the Karoq

Have a look at the above NCAP test. 9secs in to the video and you can see the bag deploying above the window - it actually starts to deploy near the B-pillar!  If you let the video roll you see it deploy at the other side of the car - same thing - it deploys from the roof !  If you look at the crash from the straight ahead view, the A trim breaks due to the force of the frontal impact, it's NOT the airbag that causes the trim to come off.

Perhaps this might put an end to people trying to remove a panel that was clearly not designed to be easily removed. So yes, just feed the power wire over the airbag canister in the A-trim - it makes no difference to how the overhead airbag deploys.
