AC playing up

Featured Replies

Guys I have checked the fan wiring, I looked at the fans fuse, I have even managed to jump the fans as the Haynes manual suggests and the fans work. I left the car in the garage at around 20 degrees celcius outside temp, with the ac set to max Lo and never once the fans kicked in. The temperature in the car was very very cold. I didn't hear anything abnormal with the cabin fans.

I remember last year even when I had the fans turned off but the AC on, there was very cold aid coming still while I was moving. But when we had the heatwave I had no cold air under any circumstances and I had no overheating warnings or anomalies.  Could the compressor have not turned on at all?

Is there a pressure regulator sensor called G65 around the radiator area that could be the culprit? Now that the weather is back to "normal" my AC works just fine.

  • Sounds like its low on gas to me, outside temp will affect the pressure it runs at, so the pressure switch is potentially stopping it.   Take it to kwik fit, get it vac'd / emptied and charg

  • Or maybe even ATS, look for their £38.99 offer, I used them last month, make sure anyone that works on your AC refits the charging port dust cover - I didn't so had to buy a new one which cost a bit!

  • Ok, but don't disregard what above gents are saying, they are far more experienced than me, this is only my reasoning

Yes, G65 pressure sensor (not regulator; close to coolant expansion tank rather than radiator, I think) tells the car what pressure the high side of the A/C is at, which in turn determines radiator fan activation when A/C is on.  Possibly the wiring from the HVAC module to the fan control unit is busted? What year is your Fabia?

it's a 2013 1.6 with 99kmiles.

I'll have to come back to you later on this, the wiring diagrams seem to have lots of options.

Is it Climatic (manual control) or Climatronic (with screen)?

it's the Climatronic with screen yes. Any extra help would be greatly appreciated

Struggling a bit to work out exactly what you have still.

One or two radiator fans?

What was the method suggested by Haynes for 'jumping' the fans?

Which fuse(s) did you check?

If there are two fans, is one fed from the other, wiring-wise, or does each have its own connection to the car loom?

I was gona take some pictures and show you, it kept raining every time I finished wor. I'm sorry to have confused you. I only have 1 fan, I blame autocorrect haha. See the Haynes manual picture

Only one fan may mean it's supposed to run at different speeds depending on thermal loading.

on it's own it never turnes on.

OK, so in the middle of that page of the Haynes there are some instructions for testing. did you do 2, 3, or both sections (2 by linking out thermoswitch loom connector, 3 direct wiring to fan)?

I have only jumped the fan with 2 wires from a spare battery I had. I haven't jumped the switch after coming up to operating temperature whilts at idle, I'm still to work it out how to do it. Basically I need to test the switch, then move to the next thing.

I'm suspecting a fuse problem, or wiring fault in the neighbourhood of the fan control unit. Confirmation of which fuses  in which fuseboxes you've checked would be good.

If you can link out the thermoswitch loom connector that would test the power feeds, the relays in the fan control unit and the power wires to the fan, so ideal really.

Don't bother running the engine up to try to trigger the switch, just go straight to unplugging the loom connector from it and linking contacts.

There are three wires going to the thermoswitch, a brown, a brown/blue, and a brown/green. To get the low speed to operate, you link the brown to brown/blue; this energises the low speed relay, and should bring the fan on at moderate speed.

For high/full speed you link brown to brown/green energising the other relay, but I think the ignition needs to be on for this one to work.

I will have to read your comment whilst under the bonnet. Thanks for that info. This is the fuse I looked at, No6 (second from the right backwards) is the coolant fan? Is that right?

Yep, that's the main permanent 12V to the fan control unit, but there's an ignition 12V feed too. The diagrams and fuse maps are confusing me to the point of suggesting you check all the blade fuses under that cover to the left of the strip fuses there, and also fuses 8 and 9 in the cabin fuseholder. That should cover all the possibilities I think.

Access to the thermoswitch is probably better from under the car, unfortunately. It's in the same vertical line as the top and bottom radiator hose connections to the rad, but rather nearer the bottom one.

Do you mean these ones too? I have to admit I have not checked the the easiest ones under the steering wheel. The rain has stopped, I will take the skoda in my garage this evening (the convertible will be out for a bit) and I'll go through your steps. Thanks again

Q: the thermoswitch has 3 wires. Brown green, Brown blue, Brown. Which ones do I bridge?

Green brown with brown?

DOH! sorry...

I forgot the health and safety briefing - mind fingers/hands when doing the linking; make sure they're not amongst the fan blades!

brown  + blue = fan On

brow + green + ignition = fan on

All fuses in car and under bonnet look ok.

I have never heard this fan sound before in this car just to mention it.

All that leaves is wiring between Climatronic unit and fan control module, and/or the Climatronic not actually requesting fan action for some reason.

Since it would take both wires to be broken for the fan to not work on either speed if it were being requested by the Climatronic, I'd have to conclude that the Climatronic module is not asking for fan action.  Why not? Dunno.

VCDS might be able to help.

I'll have to take it to my local garage for a VCDS scan. There goes £50. Which brings me to my next question. Should I invest in  vcds? I haven't got a windows laptop either which sucks. I need to go and sit on the thinking stool. ]

But anyway, thank you for your help! Very helpful.

I'd be tempted to wait and see if we get any more hot days this year!

Maybe have a look and see if there are any members near you that could scan the car (and look at HVAC measuring blocks) for some beer tokens, rather than invest in VCDS yourself? Being a tad more precise about your location may help with that.  I only have VCDS Lite which won't talk to your car properly, I believe.

Good Idea. I live in Folkestone if anyone wants to help :)
