Replacement ignition key barrel

Featured Replies

I'm trying to find out how/if I can get a replacement key barrel for the ignition, as mine has stuck and the key can't be turned (which seems to be common).

I've found the 'TOPRAN' Steering Lock for ~£33 delivered, but how do I get the key barrel itself? When the boot lock failed on my Ford Focus I was able to buy a kit from the dealer and put the pins in to match the key myself, but I can't find a similar part for Skoda.

There are various second hand 'kits' on eBay with different keys, some with a door lock - I would prefer not to go this method if I can avoid it.

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried a good squirt of WD-40 or similar?

Keys accumulate dirt for all sorts of reasons, some folks have disgusting habits, and the barrel can eventually get clogged.

I’ve tried everything, it’s failed - I have removed the steering lock & barrel but I can’t separate them despite my best efforts. I need to replace both parts..

Might be worth soaking them (immersing them) in paraffin or diesel for a couple of days.

You should be able to get new barrel from Skoda dealer as it needs to be specially ordered to match your key.   Did you manage to turn the key to specific notch as you should be able insert a thick paper clip in the hole and it should pop out.  I found you need a heavy duty paper clip to provide enough pressure for the barrel to pop out as a normal paper clip is too flimsy.

I have neither diesel or paraffin, what are my chances of success with this?

I’ll call some dealers on Monday then, I’d hoped to be able to order online somewhere. I can’t turn the key to the first notch, I’ve tried in vain to turn it further - I don’t know if I can drill into the lock to make get around this perhaps.

Sometime you need to gently wiggle the key back and forth to get it to turn as that what happen to mine when my ignition mechanism failed.

Ensure you get a positive grip on the key with a pair of self-locking pliers and use liberal amounts of lube, also try tapping on the end of the key whilst turning to jar the mechanism free.

To those interested, I purchased a replacement key barrel from Skoda for £72 and Vika Steering Lock for £35 - all back in place and working nicely.
